--- The city of Knoxville is repaving several streets in Fort Sanders, and is towing vehicles that are parked overnight. Affected streets include: Bridge Avenue, 18th Street, Forest Avenue, 14th Street, Grand Avenue, Highland Avenue, Laurel Avenue, 19th Street, 16th Street, 12th Street, and White Avenue.

Good News

--- Stefanie Bragg, a graduate student in chemistry, recently published an article in Analytica Chimica Acta. The article entitled "Flower-like self-assembly of gold nanoparticles for highly sensitive electrochemical detection of chromium(VI)" was printed as a cover article in April 2012 issue. Earlier this year, Bragg received the Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry Student Travel Award and presented her research at the 2012 International Pittsburg Conference in Orlando, Florida on March 11th.

--- WUTK-FM 90.3 The Rock, UT Knoxville's student-run radio station, was named by Men's Health magazine as one of "the 20 coolest college radio stations" in the US.

--- Two VolsTeach students have been awarded Noyce Scholarships that total more than $30,000. Mallory Campbell, a junior majoring in ecology and evolutionary biology, and Maria Owens, a senior majoring in chemistry, will each receive $12,000 for two academic years and a $10,000 induction stipend. They are the second group of recipients. The first Noyce awards were given last fall to Sarah Eakes, a senior majoring in microbiology, Melinda Hopkins, a junior majoring in math, and Joel Smith, a senior majoring in physics. The scholarships are part of a $1.2 million, five-year grant given to VolsTeach from the Robert Noyce Program of the National Science Foundation. VolsTeach aims to produce secondary math and science teachers to work in high-need school systems.

--- UT Knoxville sophomore Ariel Buehler has been named a 2012 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar, one of the nation's most prestigious awards for undergraduates. Buehler, a food science and technology major from Farragut, will receive scholarship funding from the Goldwater Foundation for her remaining two years at UT. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships are awarded yearly to sophomores and juniors pursuing careers in research in mathematics, natural sciences or engineering.

--- The final Writers in the Library event of the academic year will feature readings by student winners of the John C. Hodges Graduate Writing Prizes. Readings from the winning works will take place in the John C. Hodges Library auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16. The event is free and open to the public.

--- The Issues Committee presents Wall Street trader Kel Kelly on Monday, April 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the UC Auditorium, discussing "The Case for Legalizing Capitalism." Kelly has spent years as a research director for a Fortune 500 management consulting firm. His work has been featured on CNBC Europe and in the online editions of CNN, Forbes, BusinessWeek, and the Wall Street Journal. Kelly is currently a fellow of the Ludwig von Mises Institute. This event is free and open to the public.

--- SPEAK, Students Promoting Environmental Action in Knoxville, meeting at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16 in UC room 226. If you're interested in saving the environment, promoting green policies on campus, or even volunteering at local schools/areas in encouraging environmentally friendly actions, then stop by SPEAK.

--- Representatives from the Gulu Study and Service Abroad Program will be on the pedestrian walkway on April 17, 18, and 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. talking about "Uganda 2012: A critical response to Kony 2012." Learn more about this complex issue and see what the people in northern Uganda have to say about it. 

--- UT Cinema Club will have their final meeting of the semester this Tuesday, April 17, at 7:00 p.m. in the Library Auditorium with a screening of Ingmar Bergman's 1975 masterpiece "Cries and Whispers." Set on a mansion at the end of the 19th century, the film is about two sisters who watch over their third sister on her deathbed, torn between fearing she might die and hoping that she will. The film will be followed by a student-led discussion of the film's ideas of the female psyche, faith, and redemption. Come for an interesting film, stay for an invigorating discussion! The screening is free and open to the public. 

--- The March on Rocky Top: Follow Up Discussion Forum will take place on April 17 at 7:00 p.m. in Haslam Business Building room 202. Come to the forum and express your feelings on the Trayvon Martin case and other past cases with similar issues. Free and open to the public.


--- On Wednesday, April 18, Mrs. Deborah Polston, author, speaker, and child advocate will be speaking at the UC Auditorium. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and she will begin speaking at 6 pm. From 8:00 to 9:00 p.m., she will have a book signing. She is the author of Victor's Dream which will be available for sale in the bookstore prior to the event. For each book sold, a free copy of Victor's Dream will be gifted through Mrs. Polston's program For the Life of This Book. For more information on Mrs. Polston please visit www.deborahpolston.com. This event is free, open to the public, and has been approved for 2 CU credits for professionals in the state of Tennessee.


--- PROJECT Trio puts an eclectic spin on jazz and typical trio arrangements. Greg Patillo, Eric Stephenson, and Peter Seymour combine their passion for music, years of professional experience, and stylistic differences to produce a sound unique to them. Greg Patillo, the trio's flautist, is even known for his flute beatboxing skills as seen on his Youtube channel. PROJECT Trio will  be performing on Wednesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cox Auditorium at AMB. UT student tickets are only $5 with ID and may be purchased at the Central Ticket Office in the UC. --- Shakespeare plus Cole Porter equals the multiple Tony award-winning play "Kiss Me, Kate," on stage April 19-May 6 at the Clarence Brown Theatre. --- Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" will be held at the UT Carousel Theater on Friday, April 20 at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, April 21 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, April 22 at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The opera has been reimagined as telling the story of Elvis Presley. Special guest appearances include Jackie Onassis and Liberace. A pre-event concert will include music by the rockabilly/ska band Demon Waffle. --- Celebrate the end of the academic year at the annual Aid for Africa, sponsored by the Honors Events Committee, on Friday, April 20 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Ayres Hall Plaza. --- Volapalooza: The Kickoff to Commencement will be held on Friday, April 27 at the TRECS intramural fields. This year, the lineup of artists will include Ziggy Marley, Big Gigantic, Three 6 Mafia, and The Black Cadillacs. DJ Hailstorm will be performing between artists. Get Involved

--- Want to be part of a journal devoted to publishing undergraduate research and scholarship? Join the review board of Pursuit, the journal of undergraduate research at UT. The Pursuit editorial staff is seeking students who want to review articles submitted by UT undergraduates for possible scholarly publication. Contact editor-in-chief Sarah Russell ([log in to unmask]) to complete an application. Editorial meetings will start in August 2012.

Important Deadlines

--- The application deadline is 5:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, for the Comparative and Experimental Medicine and Public Health Research Symposium that takes place May 21 and 22 on the agriculture campus. Graduate students, post-docs, residents, interns and research assistant professors in the fields of human or animal health are encouraged to submit an abstract of their research. --- Are you a UT student who owns their own company? Would you like to receive a grant to grow your business? The Boyd Venture Fund is seeking applications from student-owned companies interested in securing a grant to help grow their businesses. The deadline for application submissions is April 24. The Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, in the College of Business Administration, administers the semi-annual fund. To apply for the grant, student owners must submit an executive summary of the business, an estimated budget, and a statement detailing how the grant would be spent to move the business forward. This information should be sent to [log in to unmask] with the subject line, The Boyd Venture Fund. Businesses invited to pitch to the grant-award committee will be notified by April 30 with presentations to the committee scheduled for Monday, May 14. Up to $20,000 will be awarded. Questions? --- The Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies welcomes undergraduate essays on any topics pertaining to late antiquity as well as to medieval and Renaissance studies for its annual undergraduate essay award. Three prizes will be awarded: $500 for first place, $300 for second place, and $200 for third place. Marco-affiliated departments include: Architecture, Art, Classics, English, History, Modern Foreign Languages & Literatures, Music, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. Papers should be no fewer than 6 and no more than 20 double-spaced pages (not including title page and endnotes or bibliography). Students should submit their essays along with a cover sheet by 5:00 p.m. on April 30. All submissions should be sent electronically to [log in to unmask]


--- Pursuit, the journal of undergraduate research at UT, is soliciting articles for the fall 2012 issue. Students who have prepared papers or theses are invited to submit them to the Pursuit editorial board for consideration. Graduating seniors have up to one year after graduation to make a submission. Page limits are 30 pages for papers in the social sciences and humanities and 15 pages for papers in the natural sciences and engineering. Notes should be styled as endnotes, not footnotes. The deadline for priority submission is May 31, 2012. Other submissions are due July 31, 2012. Submit electronically to http://trace.tennessee.edu.

Ready for the World Events

--- The Ready for the World Café will venture to Persia on Tuesday, April 17 to give diners a taste of the Middle East. The Ready for the World Café, which is sponsored by US Foods, operates from noon to 1 p.m. in the UT Visitors Center, 2712 Neyland Drive. Cost is $12. On the menu: Persian hummus; shirazi salad with tomatoes, cucumber and onion in a lemon vinaigrette; Khorest-e bademjan (fried eggplant stew with lamb served over rice and potatoes), and fereni (sweet rice pudding). Tickets should be purchased in advance of the luncheon by seeing Marcia in 110 Jessie Harris Building or calling 974-6645. The final luncheon for this semester will be Thursday, April 26, featuring German dishes.

--- Earth Month activities are continuing this week with a handful of fun and free events: 
* 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in Room 217 of the UC, attend a weatherization workshop for tips on how to improve energy efficiency in your home. 
* 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 19, ride or walk to the Humanities Plaza outdoor amphitheater for a special Bike-In movie screening of the film "Wall-E." This event will feature free food and drinks, free bike tune-ups, and a raffle.
* 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 20, visit Circle Park to peruse the student recycled art competition, grab a veggie or vegan burger, and attend the Environmental Leadership Awards, which will be presented by Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek. 
* 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 22, join Campus B and Keep Knoxville Beautiful for a campus and Fort Sanders cleanup. Visit www.utk.edu/go/o4 for more details on Earth Month events.
