A memorial service and tribute to Dr. Deborah Barreau, Frances Carroll
McColl Term Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's
School of Information and Library Science, will be held on Friday, April
27, 2012 at 2 p.m. in the George Watts Hill Alumni Center Ballroom on the
UNC at Chapel Hill campus.
Dr. Barreau passed away on February 10, 2012 after a year-long battle with
cancer (see http://sils.unc.edu/remembrance/deborah-barreau ). She is
sorely missed by her students, colleagues, family and friends.
We hope you will join us for this very special service as we honor Dr.
Barreau and celebrate her life.

SILS Teaching Award Renamed
As anyone who attended her classes will attest, Dr. Barreau was a
masterful teacher, winning the "SILS Award for Teaching Excellence" in
both 2004 and 2008, and the Outstanding Information Science Teacher
international award from the American and Society for Information Science
& Technology in 2002. She was highly respected and regarded by her
colleagues and students, known for her dedication, commitment and
kindness; exceptional mentoring skills - offering time and advice at all
hours; and for creating a classroom environment that encouraged creativity
and understanding.
Because of her dedication and outstanding ability as a teacher, the School
has renamed the "SILS Award for Teaching Excellence" the "Deborah Barreau
Award for Teaching Excellence." The award is presented annually during the
spring commencement ceremony to teachers (one full-time faculty and one
adjunct faculty member) demonstrating the highest level of teaching
excellence, commitment, innovation in teaching and effectiveness.
Several people have asked how they can make a donation to the teaching
fund that honors Dr. Barreau. Contributions may be made to the "Deborah
Barreau Award for Teaching Excellence" fund online at
https://secure.dev.unc.edu/gift/Default.aspx?s=348196775689267 or by
sending your donation to the School (checks payable to UNC - SILS with a
note directing the donation to fund 2954).
