--- Today starts UT's third annual Faculty Appreciation Week. Say thanks to your faculty for all they do by giving them an online "shout out" at http://www.utk.edu/facultyandstaff/faculty/appreciation/. You also can pick up "like" stickers today outside the University Center and on the Pedestrian Mall. Think of it as an academic Valentine!

Good News

--- Sara Kuebbing, a graduate student in ecology and evolutionary biology, is one of three recipients of the Ecological Society of America's Student Policy Awards. Kuebbing's doctoral research at UT looks at solutions and management of invasive species. She previously worked with The Nature Conservancy in Vermont where she developed and coordinated an invasive plant educational program. Kuebbing's graduate training is supported by a PEER Fellowship from the National Institutes of Health.

--- Did you come to UT with the technology skills you need to accomplish your assignments involving technology? OIT's Technology Training Workshops are designed to get you up to speed for your academic classes. Workshops are conveniently located, and free to students. --- Don't have a gift for that special someone? Nourish International will be selling handmade Ugandan jewelry around campus Monday, Feb. 13, and Tuesday, Feb. 14, and will even have gift wrapping available. Look for their table on the Pedestrian Walkway from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day.

--- The American Nuclear Society, the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management and Women in Nuclear will hold a joint meeting on Monday, February 13 at 6:30 p.m. in 324 Perkins Hall. Bernie Kirk, recently retired from ORNL, will be the featured speaker. Kirk was the director of the Radiation Safety Information Computational Center, which is responsible for promoting and distributing nuclear engineering computer codes in the United States. She also played a huge role in providing opportunities for student interns at ORNL through the Nuclear Engineering Science Laboratory Synthesis (NESLS) program. --- Poet Jason Schossler will perform at Writers in the Library on Monday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hodges Library auditorium. His first book of poetry, "Mud Cakes," is an award winner. More at lib.utk.edu/writersinthelibrary.



--- The Women's Coordinating Council will sponsor the "Vagina Monologues" on Monday, Feb. 13, and Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Carousel Theater at Clarence Brown. The play covers a range of topics and issues surrounding the feminine identity and female empowerment, health, and sexuality. This event is free and open to UT students with an ID. General public admittance is $5.

--- Do you have a learning disability such as ADHD or dyslexia? Problems with reading, math, written expression, etc.? Looking for a safe place to connect with others like you, receive support, and talk about your concerns? Then visit a student support group that mixes discussion with information on disabilities such as: advocacy, your rights, professional and personal development. --- Carnicus meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14, in UC room 226. This meeting is mandatory for any organizations interested in Carnicus. The packet and information regarding Carnicus may be found at http://activities.utk.edu/cpc/ace/.


--- The Red Cross Club will host a Pool, Poker, & Ping-Pong Party, Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the UC Down Under. Cost per person is $10, and snacks and drinks will be provided. The money raised will go toward a Free CPR Saturday event in March in which Standard Adult CPR/AED and Citizen CPR (compression-only CPR) will be taught at no cost to the public to better prepare individuals to recognize and respond to emergencies. --- Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students interest meeting, Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the UC Shiloh Room at 7:00 p.m. 

--- Relay For Life is a life-changing event that helps communities across the globe celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. All money raised goes to support the American Cancer Society. The 2012 Relay For Life at UT will be held on Friday, April 13 at Circle Park. Are you interested in joining or forming a team? Come to an interest meeting on Wednesday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Haslam room 124. --- Nourish International meeting, Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7:00 p.m. in HSS room 203. The mission of Nourish International is to eradicate poverty by engaging students and empowering communities.


--- The UT Science Forum presents Mark Blevins, history teacher and basketball coach at Bearden High School, speaking on "This Most Uncivilized War – Reenacting Civil War History in the Classroom," on Friday, Feb. 17, from noon to 1:00 p.m. The Science Forum is free and open to the public. --- Screening of the film "Miss Representation," a documentary film that links the media's portrayal of women to the dearth of women in leadership positions, at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28, in the Hodges Library Auditorium. Read more at www.lib.utk.edu/news.

--- The UT Graduate Student Senate will host its 20th annual Love Your Libraries 5K Race to benefit the UT Libraries on Saturday, March 3 at 9:00 a.m. in Circle Park. Show your love for the UT Libraries. Entry form at www.lib.utk.edu/5k.

--- UT's Clifton M. Jones Student Leadership Conference will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2012, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the UC. This year students will be able to learn how to lead with integrity, authenticity, confidence, purpose, or any other particular skill, context or attribute for which you have a passion. This year's conference will feature keynote speaker Doc Hendley, founder of Wine to Water, 2009 CNN Hero, and author of Wine to Water: A Bartender's Quest to Bring Clean Water to the World. The conference is free and a t-shirt, lunch, and conference materials will be provided to all conference participants. Dress is business casual. The conference is limited to the first 400 students who register so be sure to sign up soon at http://sold.utk.edu/conference/.

--- The English Language Institute (ELI) is seeking volunteers from the campus and community to serve in its spring Conversation Partner Program. Conversation Partners meet on a weekly basis with ELI international students for the purpose of practicing English conversation. Learn how to strengthen your leadership, change the world, disregard the impossible and lead with integrity. Apply now for the opportunity to attend a six-day institute that will be hosted specifically for 60 selected students on May 11-16, 2012.
