Our program is at http://www.cals.vt.edu/operations/documents/conversionprog-24mar11.pdf

This is has been used for the last several years and I think that we will offer it for 2012. We've had a number of people take this mostly with teaching research appointments though a few with Extension appointments have done it. Faculty on Federal appointment and Extension Agents are ineligible.

All new tenure track are hired as 9 month appointments with 2 months of summer support for the the first two years provided by the college. Most faculty that did this fund their summer through grants and contracts.

The only 9 month schedule approved has the non-work time during the summer. We already have existing policy which then allows the base 9 month appointment to be re-converted to 10-11-12 months if external funding is approved.

This was all voluntary, though the university has had some discussion about developing a policy that includes mandatory conversion. However, there are no current efforts to have mandatory conversion.

Subject: Changes

Have any of you begun moving 12-month faculty to 9, 10, or 11 month appointments? If so, can you send me a copy of any “plan” you used? Particular questions we’re trying to answer are ----

· Number of months faculty were reduced to. Do all take off the same months? If not, how are the months determined?

· Did you use the standard salary reduction formula or did they get a salary advantage by moving and/or the opportunity to make up the salary for the other months with grant or other similar funds?

· Were the moves voluntary or involuntary --- and does your system allow these changes to be done on an involuntary basis?

· Did you do this for faculty in the federal (we only have CSRS) retirement system – our understanding has always been that these individuals have to stay on 12-month appointments.

· Was this done for all faculty, or just certain groups. If only for certain groups, what was the rationale?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. Hope you are all well.
