Assistant Director/Children’s Librarian for East Tennessee community will work
under the general direction and supervision of the Library Director. The
position will operate the children’s library and assume director’s responsibilities
in her absence.
Nature of Work
Under the general direction and supervision of the Library Director, this
position performs responsible, professional, and supervisory work in planning,
implementing and managing a comprehensive program of services for the
children’s library. In the absence of the Library Director, this position assumes
responsibility for the operation of the library.
This position requires knowledge of current library technologies and
applications and the ability to give friendly, expert service to patrons of all
ages and backgrounds. This person must have excellent communication skills
and possess sound judgment, tact, courtesy and initiative. This person must
also have the ability to work well with staff and volunteers. Leadership skills
are a must.
Education Requirements
This position prefers a Masters Degree in Library Science and a minimum of
two years’ experience in a public library setting.
Primary Duties (Assistant Director) – 20% of Duties
• Manages library operations and facilities in the absence of the
Director
• Participates in personnel selection, management and evaluation
• Assists in the development of operating policies and procedures
• Assists in near and long range planning for library services
Primary Duties (Children’s Librarian) – 80% of Duties
• Develops and conducts programs for children and caregivers which
encourage reading, viewing and listening skills and the use of the library
services
• Engages in outreach to schools, daycares, preschools, and other
community organizations and agencies that serve children and their caregivers
• Directs the daily operation of the Children’s Library to ensure the
highest quality service possible
• Serves as a liaison to community agencies serving children
• Provides reference and reader advisory services to children, school
teachers, and caregivers
• Develops, promotes and implements programs and services for
children and caregivers (i.e. Summer Reading Program)
• Develops children’s library policies
• Pursues and applies for grants for children’s services
• Selects all materials for the Children’s Library
• Evaluates and maintains children’s collection for balance and
comprehensiveness
• Performs public service duties, such as scheduling, assisting patrons
with automated databases and other equipment as needed
• Prepares statistical and narrative reports for Director
• Participates in professional library organizations and attends
meetings and workshops

caregivers and other professionals who work with children.

• Maintains detailed and accurate records and files
• Has the ability to maintain composure in busy, high-energy work
environment
• Has the physical strength and ability to bend, reach, lift and carry
up to 25 lbs
• Has excellent computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite, internet
search engines, and library circulation software.
• Ability to manage website material would be helpful
Minimum requirements: ALA accredited MLS degree preferred with two (2)
years’ experience in a public library setting. Salary range $32,000 - $35,000
with competitive benefits.
