Greetings all.
This is the season when new doc students want to get faculty positions.
From my 20 years of running jESSE, I offer the following (and encourage
other folks hiring folks to contribute):
1) Don't hit the reply button and send your c.v. to all of the 2000
members of jESSE around the world when you see an announcement of a
faculty position.
2) Target your reply letter to the needs of the position as announced.
If the school is looking for a school librarian, I'd avoid emphasizing
your skills in CGI, HTML, social media, or other IT topics unless you can
make those skills relevant to the K-6 set.
3) Pay attention to the function of the REPLY button. Know who you are
sending your response to, and IN WHAT FORMAT they want it or in what
format they can accept it (they may not have the same software that you
do).
I received three of these mis-directed and ill-conceived msgs on a
Saturday nite. People, please pay attention. Employers are largely
asking the right questions. But applicants are not understanding the
questions asked. And not responding well.
