Special

--- A section of Estabrook Road alongside the Min H. Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building will be closed for repaving until Wednesday, Nov. 16.  A roadblock will be placed at the intersection of Tee Martin Drive and Estabrook Road. No traffic will be allowed to pass through the intersection. All vehicles entering Middle Way Drive must continue along Middle Way Drive to exit the Hill area. Employees who normally park along that section of Estabrook Road will be able to park in the 11th Street garage. For more information, contact the UT Police Department at 974-3114.

--- The Benefits of “Internationalizing” Your Education, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14 in UC room 226. International Research?  Study Abroad?  International Programs?  Does it really make a difference at all if you add an international component to your education?  Come to a session about the importance of including an international focus as part of your education.

--- Writers in the Library will host author Robert Morgan at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14 in the Hodges Library Auditorium. Morgan is a poet (Terroir), novelist (Gap Creek), and biographer (Boone). More information at www.lib.utk.edu/writersinthelibrary.

--- Eat Moe's and Support Habitat for Humanity. Tuesday, Nov. 15, Moe's Southwest Grill near campus will be donating a percentage of their profits to the UTK Campus Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.  The more they make, the bigger percentage they donate, so bring a couple friends and indulge in a burrito and some queso.

--- Are you interested in the nation’s most prestigious fellowships and scholarships? If so, come to the Greer Room in Hodges Library from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, to learn about the opportunities, timelines, and procedures for these programs.

--- Are you interested in going to China next summer to teach English?  If so, come to the International House Great Room from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Come to this information session to hear about UT’s Tsinghua Program.  Hear from the Summer 2011 participants about this amazing experience.
 

--- The UT Amateur Radio Club will host an Open Shack, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 15, demonstrating the use of HF radio equipment to contact distant countries around the world. --- Amnesty International at UT invites you to the Black Cultural Center Conference room from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16 to write for human rights as part of our annual Global Write-a-Thon. This year, the focus is on human rights abuses and includes freedom of expression, justice, student/youth activism, women's rights, LGBTQ rights, right to housing, and indefinite detention. Join us in writing on behalf of those suffering human rights abuses in the United States and around the world. Case sheets, sample letters, and writing materials will be provided. Free food and refreshments will be served.

--- The UTK Issues Committee will host Jim Keady, theologian, activist, educator, elected official, and founding director of Educating for Justice, Inc. He will speak at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16 in the UC Auditorium. Along with personal accounts of the month Keady spent in Indonesia living on the $1.25 a day wage Nike subcontracted workers are paid, the presentation includes the latest information on Nike’s labor and environmental practices and challenges their audience to deal in human terms with the women, men and sometimes children, who are the foundation of global manufacturing. --- McClure Scholarship International Projects Gallery, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 in the I-House Great Room. Recipients of the McClure Scholarship will display their international research projects. Come by to see their work and get information about how you can apply for the McClure Scholarship yourself.  

--- Thinking about studying abroad?  Wondering what it’s like to live and study in another country?  Listen to the experts – your peers – from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 in the UC room 226. They’ll tell you what you really want to know. Several returning students will talk about their personal experiences and you’ll learn how you can take advantage of the opportunity yourself.

--- A film screening of "Desert Flower" will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 in the UC Auditorium. From Somali’s deserts to the world’s catwalks, former supermodel Waris Dirie tells her life-story of growing up in a nomadic tribe in Somalia, fleeing the hardships of her country’s archaic rituals and her journey in London as a janitor and maid before her discovery by a fashion photographer that led her to the runway.
Join the UT Knoxville Women’s Coordinating Council for this screening which tackles female circumcision, genital mutilation, violence against women and one woman’s struggle to free herself from her circumstances and her strive to educate the world on the subject of violence against women.

--- The Accomplished Alumni Program invites Keith Taylor, the creator and founder of “Modest Needs", on Friday, Nov. 18 at 2:00 p.m. at the Baker Center.  A 1998 English PhD graduate, his non-profit organization gives out small grants to people with “modest needs” through the support of individual donors.  He has been featured on local and national news stations for the good will that his organization encourages and has been recognized by Oprah Magazine, the Clinton Global Initiative, USA Today, and People magazine.  He will be speaking on “The Most Exciting Time to Be Alive:  Achieving Success by Changing Your Mind, and Other Lessons Learned from Meeting ‘Modest Needs.’” This event is open to all.

--- UT and Partners in Sports will send the sixth team to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis next February. This team of nine students will work various events before, during and after the Super Bowl and learn first hand what goes on behind-the-scenes to produce such a large event.  Students will supplement their classroom education with experiential learning in marketing, event management, hospitality, development and communications. TEAM UT needs your help to get to Indy and fully experience hands-on learning at its best. They are hosting a Tailgate Fundraiser from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20 at Irish Times Pub and Restaurant in Turkey Creek. The event will feature tailgate foods, drinks and much more. There will be a silent auction featuring items like an Eric Berry signed football, exclusive private tours of Neyland Stadium and Thompson-Boling Arena, sideline football game passes, skin care products, personal training sessions and more. --- Habitat for Humanity at UTK Interest Meeting, Sunday, Nov. 20 at 7:00 p.m. in HSS 51. Come if you are interested in getting involved in Habitat! 

--- The UT Rotaract Club will hold a screening of "The Final Inch" on Monday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hodges Library Auditorium. This short documentary discusses the ongoing fight to eradicate polio. The film follows healthcare workers as they attempt to immunize children in Afghanistan, India, and Pakistan, and recounts the devastating polio epidemics that have occurred in the United States just a few decades ago. The viewing will be followed by a question and answer session.

Get Involved

--- The 24th annual Orange and Blue Blood Drive is happening this week. Medic Blood Regional Center challenges all students to take a small amount of time out of their day and donate blood to help UT beat Kentucky! Medic will be set up inside rooms 223-224 at the University Center today through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Donors can also visit the following locations:

Tuesday, November 15: 
South Carrick Hall, noon to 8 p.m.
Neyland Stadium, Gate 21, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Wednesday, November 16:
Hess Hall, from noon to 8 p.m.

Thursday, November 17:
Hollingsworth Auditorium, ag campus, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Donors will receive a T-shirt, food, a free cholesterol screening, and will be entered into a raffle to win two skybox tickets and two pre-game sideline passes to the UT-Vanderbilt football game on November 19. --- Looking for an elective for next semester? Consider taking RSM 425 with Dr. Hayes. The class will meet on Thursday nights, is a 3-hour course credit, and focuses on working with kids with multiple disabilities. Throughout the semester students learn about autism, CP, Down's syndrome, and other disorders, how to do wheelchair transfers, how to adapt activities, and much more, all in preparation to implement Camp Koinonia, April 15-20, 2012. --- CURENT Research Experience for Undergraduates -– The NSF-DOE Engineering Research Center for Ultra-wide-area Resilient Electric Energy Transmission Networks offers opportunities to work on research topics related to the interconnected electric power grid. The program pays each student $4,000 for 8-10 weeks of research, and campus housing is provided at no cost. Application deadline: Feb. 10, 2012. Knoxville Connection

--- The UT Center for Health Policy and Services Research will host a public forum to help the public understand the new requirement of "health insurance exchanges" from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 14. The forum also will explore issues surrounding it and outline some alternatives to the state-based site. The event will be held at the East Tennessee Historical Society, 601 S. Gay St. The forum is free and open to the public. Free parking is available at the State Street, Market Square and Locust Street garages and at street meters beginning at 6:00 p.m.

This Week in SGA

--- This is our International Week with Diversity Affairs. On Monday, Nov. 14, we are having a flash mob on Pedestrian Walkway from 12:05p.m. to 12:20 p.m. to show the campus dances of different cultures. Also on Monday, in the UC Ballroom from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., we are having our Dance to Diversity Event. Food, drinks, and dancing will be provided. On Tuesday, Nov. 15, we are having our International Sports night in the UC Down Under. We will promote all different sports from around the world while also have a FIFA soccer tournament hosted by EA Sports. The winners will get free copies of the new FIFA game and we will have pizza for everyone attending. On Wednesday, Nov. 16, we are having our "Who Knew" event in the UC Hermitage Room from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. We are talking about events, locations, and other things that many college students don't really "know" about; refreshments will be provided as well. On Thursday, Nov. 17, we are having our "Education Connection" Event in!
  the UC Hermitage Room from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. This is a discussion about how college and high school life is in other countries. We have many organizations helping out with these events so come out and have some fun. Our Volunteer Services committee is having our Campus Safety Walk on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 5:30 p.m. For more information about getting involved, visit sga.utk.edu.
