To all math majors (and math advisors):
As you are planning for the spring and next year, I wanted to update you
and remind you about some features of the math curriculum:
1) If you make a grade >F but <C (i.e. D-, D, D+, C-) in a course for
the math major, it won't count. However, I am continuing the practice
of allowing a student to count one (and only one) such course towards
the major. If you want or need to take advantage of this, at the
beginning of the semester you are graduating, fill out a petition asking
for the course to count towards the major, have your advisor sign it,
and give it to me or Tina (in Ayres 225B). You can get the online
version of a petition from the A&S advising web-site under 'Forms'.
2) We've passed some changes to the major for Fall 2012, but they are
available to current students through petition. We've expanded the list
of courses that count as a sequence for the major. The new list is: (*
marks new, s means summer offering, x means not scheduled for the near
future)
423-424
423-425
*423-421
445-446
447-448
*445-443x
455-456
457-458
471-472
*471-475
*472-475
*431s-435s
*431s-453s
*462x-467
If you complete one of these and want to use it as your pairing and you
don't want to switch to the 2012 catalog, submit a petition through your
advisor.
All the rest of the requirements are the same. These pairings are
available for the honors concentration with the same rules as before.
