--- UT Knoxville is participating in the recently launched National Retail Federation Student Association. The goal is to foster and recruit talented students into the retail industry and enhance their educational experience. --- An MBA team representing the UT Knoxville College of Business Administration recently placed in the top six out of 22 competitors at the 2011 National Black MBA Association Case Competition. The contest, sponsored annually by Chrysler, is one of the most prestigious case competitions for MBA students. UT's team of full-time MBA students, Kimel Fryer, Laronda Jones, and Alex McGhee, participated in a case that asked them to recommend a strategy to help Chrysler excel at attracting and retaining top talent.

--- A new page has been launched on the undergraduate research website called Faculty Experiences at http://research.utk.edu/undergrad/highlights/exp.shtml. Students can go online to find stories and some vintage photos of their professors from their undergraduate research days. The Q&A format includes tips and advice for students who are considering the pursuit of their own undergraduate research experience.

--- Come downtown for a screening of Invisible Children's new film "Tony." The event is free and open to students and the public. It will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Remedy Cafe, in downtown Knoxville. There will be free food.

--- Novelist Amy Greene, author of "Bloodroot," will read at Writers in the Library, tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the Hodges Library Auditorium. "Bloodroot" is a saga set in the Smoky Mountains, narrated by different members of the Lamb family and tracing the family's history from the Great Depression to the present. Free and open to the public.

--- The fourth and final Life of the Mind discussion panel, "Undergraduate Research at UTK: Be Inspired, Get Involved!" begins at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18 in the UC Auditorium. During this panel discussion, first-year students will hear from several undergraduates currently active in research at UT, including some students who work with HeLa cells. The student-researchers will describe the work they are doing, how their ideas evolved into their research and how they found their faculty research mentors.

--- UT Amateur Radio Club meeting, 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, in 401 East Stadium Hall. Discuss how to get a license, choosing your first radio and review some recent contacts with Italy, Greenland, Cuba and Wales. --- Campus Entertainment Board and Central Programming Council present "Vol Night Long: Vols Gone Wild" from 10:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, to 2:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in TRECS. This event is designed to create alternative late-night programming for students. Featured attractions will include a foam party, inflatables, games, prizes, pizza, and much more! Students must have a valid student ID to attend. Accompanied guests are welcome. This event is entirely free to students.

--- The Chancellor's Honors Program presents the 5th annual Masquerade Ball, from 8:00 p.m. to midnight on Saturday, October 22, in Circle Park. Enjoy a night of dancing and fun to support Second Harvest Food Bank. All UT students and their guests are welcome. Enjoy entertainment by DJ Jason Lovely of Bliss Entertainment and food from local restaurants. Other activities will include pumpkin carving and mask contests! Get your free event passes on the Pedestrian Walkway this week. This year canned food donations will be collected to support Second Harvest Food Bank. Only event pass holders will be allowed in the tent at 8:00 p.m. for the buffet. All other guests are welcome at 9:00 p.m. Suggested attire is semi-formal to formal. Masks are encouraged and appreciated! Co-sponsored by the Central Program Council, the United Residence Hall Council, and the Honors Community Board.

--- The office of Student Orientation & Leadership Development is looking for a new group of student leaders to serve as Orientation Leaders, Transfer Orientation Assistants, Leadership Guides, and Ignite Team Leaders for 2012. Important Deadlines

--- Submissions are currently being accepted for the Spring 2012 edition of Pursuit, with a deadline of Oct. 21. Established in 2009, Pursuit is dedicated to publishing the scholarly work of UTK undergraduates and is supported by the Office of Research and the Chancellor's Honors program. Works from all academic colleges and departments are accepted. The editors and review board are undergraduate students who review submissions and work with select faculty and staff to publish the journal. Ready for the World Events

--- The International House presents China Week, Oct. 17-20. The series of events begin with a screening of the film "IP Man," in Mandarin with English subtitles, 6:30 p.m. tonight in the I-House, and is free and open to the public. Other events include a Shanxi-style puppet show and cooking demonstration at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18 (free), a Chinese Culture Night at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 (tickets $5 each), and a China-themed Global Hour discussion session, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 (free). --- The Ready for the World Café at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, will offer diners a taste of England on Tuesday, October 18. The Ready for the World Café is a weekly, full-service, fine-dining experience with international themes. It now operates in the UT Visitors Center, 2712 Neyland Drive. Lunch, including small appetizer, salad, entrée, and dessert, will be served from noon to 1:00 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance and capacity is 50 to 60 diners. Cost is $12, and the faculty/staff discount card can be used. To purchase advance tickets, see Marcia in 110 Jessie Harris Building, or call 865-974-6645. Come enjoy the exciting English menu this week!

--- A Ready for the World grant has funded the visit of Dr. Susanna Delfino of the political science department of the University of Genoa, Italy, who will do research at the Special Collections and will deliver the following lectures: 

- "Historical Writing and the Representation of Women in American Movies on the Old South," 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, in 253 Hodges Library;

- "'Belles No More': Historians Revisit 'Gone with the Wind,'" 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, in 253 Hodges Library.

--- Sign up for "Race for the Cure" with UT's Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society. The race is at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, October 22, in Worlds Fair Park. Register under team name Alpha Epsilon Delta. This is a 3 point event for members and you can sign up to run, walk, or sleep for the cure! --- The 2nd annual Barefoot Benefit will be held on Sunday, October 23, at 2:00 p.m. on the fairways of Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville, TN. Participants of the race are encouraged to run shoeless to support the cause; however, they will have the option of running with shoes, as well. Participants have the option of running a 5K (3.1 miles) or a 1-mile fun run. Participants can register online or on the day of the race. All proceeds from the event will go to benefit the Samaritan Place, an emergency housing shelter for the elderly in the Knoxville community. This family friendly event will feature local vendors and musicians from Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville. Guests at the event will be able to enter to win door prizes throughout the day.

--- The Student Government Association will be hosting its second annual Senate Blitz, today through until Thursday, October 18. Each day from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., SGA Senate members will be positioned at various locations on campus according to their constituency based on college or place of residency.
