CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY LUMINARIES PANEL - In celebration of a hundred years of library education at CUA and the thirtieth anniversary of SLIS, mark your calendars for the Luminaries Panel on October 20, 2011 from 7:00-9:00pm in the Edward J. Pryzbyla Center Great Rooms.  Anne Caputo the 2010 President of Special Libraries Association, Maureen Sullivan the 2012-2013 President of American Library Association, and Susan Hildreth the Director of Institute for Museum and Libraries Services will be our panelists.

SLIS ANNOUNCEMENTS

CUA AWARDED DOL GRANT FOR HIT PROGRAMS - On October 4, U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced the Catholic University and its partners had been awarded $4,175,500 to support the education and training of health care workers in the health information technology programs offered by SLIS and the Metropolitan School of Professional Studies. Our partners include Providence Hospital, Children's National Medical Center, Holy Cross Hospital, and Sibley Memorial Hospital.

VISIONS OF ITALY - SLIS will be offering a study abroad program in summer 2012 to Rome and Florence, Italy from May 26 - June 9, 2012. Students in the course will learn, professionals in Italian museums, libraries, and archives have fantastic cultural materials to work with. This program is open to both CUA and non-CUA participants.

ONLINE WEEKEND LEARNING (OWL) - SLIS launched this new program in Fall 2011 and is recruiting students for the Spring 2012 semester. OWL blends four face-to-face Saturday class meetings with online learning.

SCHOOL OWL  - SLIS will also begin offering the OWL program for students interested in the School Library Media track, called School OWL.

HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (HIT) - SLIS is recruiting new students for the Master of Science in Information Technology, with a concentration in Health Information Technology program. Students may begin their study in spring 2012. Scholarships will be provided to qualified students.

SLIS JOINED NDSA - SLIS has joined the National Digital Stewardship Alliance and our faculty and students will contribute to the preservation of digital contents for future generation.

FACULTY NEWS

DR. INGRID HSIEH-YEE has been appointed to the Catholic Research Resources Alliance Five-Year Strategic Plan Task Force to develop a five-year strategic plan for the Alliance.

DR. SUNG UN KIM and Jessica Zeiler (SLIS '11) presented "Social Media Interactions for Reading Promotion" in the 5th International Symposium on Library Services for Children and Young Adults in South Korea on June 9-10, 2011. The full paper is available in both English and Korean.

DR. JANE ZHANG participated in a panel presentation at the 75th Annual Meeting of the Society of American Archivists in Chicago on August 26th. The topic of the panel was "Re-Arranging Arrangement and Description: Original Order and Provenance in Modern Multi-Format Collections". Dr. Zhang also attended the National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) Outreach Working Group conference call on September 12 to discuss possibilities to engage SLIS students with "Digital Preservation in a Box" activities.
