Students who are interested in participating in the Putnam Competition
(on Sat Dec 03, 2011) need to be registered shortly.
If you are interested, please send e-mail to Jochen Denzler
at [log in to unmask] BEFORE NOON, MONDAY
The Putnam Competition is a US-and-Canada wide competition for
mathematically highly skilled undergraduate students (regardless of major).
It is proctored locally, so no travel is involved.
If you are not sure yet, but are seriously interested, get registered anyways.
For logistical reasons, we are not allowed to increase the number of
participants later, but participants can withdraw without penalty.
Last year's participants (if still eligible) and those in Math 309 will
be registered by default, unless they tell me not to. New participants
need to contact me to get registered. (Likewise earlier participants
that were not participating last year.)
Participation and non-zero score on a Putnam competition make a strong point
in the CV for grad school applications.

On Sat Oct 29, we will participate in the Virginia-Tech Regional Math
Competition (VTRMC), which has a similar purpose as the Putnam competition.
(Call it a `warm-up' for Putnam.)
Please let me also know if you are interested in participating; so that I can
put you on the distribution list for announcements about the details.
VTRMC allows short-term additions.
The VTRMC Saturday is a home game Saturday: If this poses difficulties
for you to get to campus, let me know and we can arrange for a ride.
