--- Join the run-up to "Do Deutsch!," this year's October celebration of all things German, and give yourself a chance to win terrific prizes, including gift cards, sports memorabilia, event tickets, and much, much more!

UT Knoxville students can enter the "Do Deutsch!" Olympiad, a series of creativity contests based upon the theme "German(y) in your Life." Entries can be in English, Deutsch (German), or a mixture of both.

These creativity competitions are facilitated through BlackBoard, and the entire campus is invited to participate. Instructions are posted at http://www.dodeutsch.utk.edu/olympiad/.

--- A celebration of the life of Roger Stephens, director of the UT School of Music, will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Cox Auditorium of the Alumni Memorial Building. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to the tribute, which will include remembrances and musical reflections. Stephens died in February after a seven-year battle with cancer.

--- Diabetes Advocacy Board interest meeting, 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, in UC 223-224. The Diabetes Advocacy Board is open to both diabetic and non-diabetic students and exists to create a support system for diabetic students, to increase campus awareness of diabetes, and to support diabetes research. All are welcome to attend. BYOI - Bring Your Own Insulin! 

--- The UT Libraries will host a series of events this week celebrating the achievements of African American students and faculty at UT Knoxville. On Thursday, Sept. 8, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the 2nd floor entrance to Hodges Library, enjoy music, poetry, a video expo, step-dancing, and more. There will also be two free screenings of the film "Miss Evers' Boys," the true story of the U.S. government's 1932 Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments, at 2:00 p.m. in 212 Hodges Library and at 6:00 p.m. in Hodges Library Auditorium.

--- "Legality and Ethics: Research and the Legacy of Henrietta Lacks at UTK" will be the topic of a Life of the Mind panel discussion on Thursday, September 8. The hour-long panel discussion, which begins at 5:30 p.m., will be held in the Alumni Memorial Building auditorium.

--- Interested in pharmacy? The American Pharmacists Association: Academy of Student Pharmacists (ASP) interest meeting, 6:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in HSS room 204. Two current students from the UT College of Pharmacy will speak. The club stresses the education of people about the field of pharmacy, its curriculum, and the application process, while also networking with current students and faculty. Questions? --- In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the UT Knoxville College of Communication and Information (CCI) is sponsoring a screening of the documentary film "The Falling Man." The film will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 8, in the CCI Auditorium in the Communications Building. The event is free and open to the public.

--- Archaeology lecture, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the McClung Museum auditorium. Speaker: Iannis Lolos, University of Thessaly, Greece. Topic: "The Archaeological Exploration of Sikyon: a Comprehensive Approach to the Study of a Greek City-State." Learn more about Sikyon, an ancient Greek city famous for its artistic excellence, and the results of more than a century of excavations at the site. Free and open to the public. --- Kevin Hines jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge, but lived to tell the tale. Join him on Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom for a discussion about suicide prevention, mental health, and his story about surviving the 220-foot plunge into the bay. --- The German Saturday School of Knoxville is currently enrolling students of all ages and proficiency levels, including beginners, for the 2011-12 school year. The school was founded by UT faculty in 2004, and ever since, it has served the larger Knoxville community by offering German classes for children, teenagers and adults. Classes are held at Sacred Heart Cathedral School on Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and the 2011-12 school year will start on Sept. 17, 2011. --- Anonymous Mental Health and Substance Abuse Screenings for UT Students --- Free screenings are available online and are completely confidential. These screenings can help UT students understand if their feelings are normal signs or a bigger issue. Along with information about feelings you may be struggling with, the site provides information about counseling resources available. --- The Women's Coordinating Council is recruiting new members. The mission of WCC is to empower women on campus and to promote awareness of issues that women face daily through programs and events. If you are eager, committed, and passionate about being involved, pick up an application in the Women’s Center on the 3rd floor of the UC. Applications are due on Friday, Sept. 16. Questions? --- The International House and the Latin American Student Organization present Latin American Movie Night, 6:30 p.m. tonight in the I-House Great Room. Knoxville Connection

--- Girls on the Run is a nonprofit after-school running/self esteem building program for girls ages 8-14. The fall season will begin next week and volunteer coaches are needed. All coaches will be trained and provided a curriculum. Training will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12. The program seeks dependable, energetic volunteers that enjoy working with young girls. You do not have to be a runner to be a coach.
