Newsletter for UT Knoxville Students

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special

--- --- Welcome Back ---

Welcome to UT Knoxville for the 2011-2012 academic year! Welcome Week continues with a full schedule of events.

Today:

--- Sign the Rock ---

On their way to Torch Night, freshmen will be invited to sign UT's famous Rock for the first time.

--- Torch Night ---

Torch Night is the official welcome to the Class of 2015, but it also marks the return to campus for all students. The ceremony takes place at 7:00 p.m. tonight at Thompson-Boling Arena. Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek will welcome the students, underclassmen will take a pledge of loyalty to the university, freshmen will be formally declared part of the student body and candles will be lit to symbolize the "Torch of Preparation."

Following Torch Night, the Class of 2015 will head to Neyland Stadium for the Night in Neyland, an opportunity to hear from the coaching staff, learn some of UT's athletic traditions and take the official class picture. The evening will wrap up with a video dance party at 9:30 p.m. at Presidential Courtyard.

For more Welcome Week info and a full schedule of events, visit http://welcomeweek.utk.edu.

--- --- Pedestrian safety on campus --- As students and faculty come back to Big Orange Country, it won't be hard to notice large-scale construction and improvement projects on many corners of our campus. From new academic buildings to improved services, the UT community will be a part of opening many new and renovated facilities over this new academic year.

The University of Tennessee Police Department (UTPD) has suggested safer, quicker routes for pedestrians on campus. Andy Holt Avenue at Phillip Fulmer Way is one of the busiest intersections on campus. UTPD is encouraging members of the campus community to use the pedestrian bridges at the University Center (UC) as an alternative to using the crosswalks to ease its congestion. Two bridges connect the UC to The Hill while two other paths take pedestrians alongside the Haslam Business Building toward the intersection of Andy Holt Avenue and Volunteer Boulevard. These walkways are accessed at the second level of the UC, off the plaza.

--- --- Sign Up for UT Alert --- UT Alert is the emergency text messaging system on campus used to enhance and improve communication so that all members of the campus community can stay informed in the event of a campus emergency. Students are alerted via text message and/or e-mail if there is an immediate danger on campus. Pertinent information will be relayed, along with where students can go for more information. The system is only used for emergency contact purposes, and does not distribute advertising or other unsolicited content. To sign up for UT Alert, you will need your NetID and password. Additional information and a link to sign up are located at https://www.utk.edu/utalert/.

Good News

--- KUB can help UT students make their move easier with the "Start/Stop" utilities service function at http://www.kub.org. Whether it's a move to Knoxville or to a new house or apartment across town, UT students who are KUB customers can start or stop their utility service online from anywhere, anytime. Just go to http://www.kub.org and follow the Start/Stop link under Service Options on the home page. New visitors will need to register on the site to set up an account. Students even can select a date to start or stop service online, and will get a confirmation e-mail when the service request is submitted.
