Good News

--- The UT Knoxville Office of Research now offers two new certificate programs. The Certificate in Grant Writing and Proposal Development helps students learn the basics of grant writing and proposal preparation for sponsored research opportunities. It consists of classroom and online workshops.
The Certificate in IRB/Human Subjects Research will familiarize students with the Institutional Review Board process at UT Knoxville. This online
(Blackboard) course is appropriate for both undergraduate and graduate students performing human subjects research. For more information on either certificate contact the Office of Research at [log in to unmask]

The Institute of Nuclear Materials Management will be having its first meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, in 308 Pasqua Nuclear Engineering Building. Larry Satkowiak, Director of Global Security and Nonproliferation Programs at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), will be speaking about current challenges in the nuclear security field, as well as jobs at ORNL. --- The UT Libraries will host a series of events next week celebrating the achievements of African American students and faculty at UT Knoxville. On Thursday, Sept. 8, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the 2nd floor entrance to Hodges Library, enjoy music, poetry, a video expo, step-dancing, and more. There will also be two free screenings of the film "Miss Evers' Boys," the true story of the U.S. government's 1932 Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments, at 2:00 p.m. in 212 Hodges Library and at 6:00 p.m. in Hodges Library Auditorium.

Program examples include: time management, study skills, icebreakers, servant leadership, communication skills, true colors, team building, and many others. --- The Emerging Leaders Class is a three credit-hour course taught every spring for sophomores and juniors interested in studying leadership theories, styles and practices. The class also participates in an exchange trip where students visit peer institutions in another city in order to learn more about leadership programs and organizations on those campuses. The Office of Student Orientation & Leadership Development (SOLD) will be accepting applications for our 2012 Emerging Leaders class beginning Sept. 12. Questions? --- Applications for The Volunteer Experience (TVE) are now available to all freshmen. TVE is a student-led organization that allows freshmen at UT to leave the college bubble and become a part of the Knoxville community through sustained service. For the first semester, all TVE students will serve together in one location once a month. In the spring, students serve where they feel they will make the most impact (and where they feel they will be most impacted) for ten hours a month in order to affect lasting change. This Week in SGA

--- Want to make decisions that affect your freshman class? Then apply for SGA Freshman Council! Interview to be chosen as one of the 44 members to pass legislation affecting all freshmen as well as plan social and philanthropic events. Any student also can apply to serve on an SGA Student Services Committee. Committees include: Academic Affairs, Campus Beautification, Campus Outreach, Diversity Affairs, Government Affairs, New Student Relations, Technology Services, Traditions, and Volunteer Services. These committees are a great way to meet other students, and actively play a part in changing our campus!
