Dear Math Honors Students,
You should now or soon have selected a faculty mentor, with whom you
should meet once per month (4 times per semester). You may download a form
to keep a record of visits at the math honors website
http://web.utk.edu/~mathhon/require.html (bottom of page). On this form
you should also record the three required public talks that you
attend--usually the Junior Colloquium, which is announced via the UTKMATH
listserv. You may keep that yourself or Tina can keep it on file in her
office. If you can't attend the JC due to your schedule, it is your
responsibility to find three other math-related public talks to attend
this semester. Note that 3 talks is the minimum requirement--you are
expected to attend the JC as often as possible.
Graduating seniors: you are required as a condition of your scholarships
to make good progress on your senior thesis during this semester. That
means that you need to choose a thesis adviser in the next few days and
let me know who he/she is. You should discuss with your adviser what
progress you intend to make this semester, and e-mail me by
*September 1*
a summary of your plan for progress this semester. You may sign up for
thesis credits (Math 498) this semester or next semester, since you will
likely be working on your thesis during both. Your thesis will be due
April 15.
Finally, if you are considering doing a 5th year MS in math, you need to
enroll in some of your courses for graduate credit. Let me know if you are
considering this option.
