Special

--- Study days and final exams continue this week, as the Spring 2011 semester concludes. Most academic and administrative offices will remain open. For the complete academic calendar, visit the Office of the Registrar's website at http://registrar.utk.edu/academic_calendar/. College commencement ceremonies will begin next week. For the complete schedule of ceremonies for each college, visit http://registrar.tennessee.edu/graduation/commencement/spring11_cer.shtml.

Good News

--- The Boyd Venture Fund, administered by the Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the College of Business Administration, is soliciting applications from student companies for its inaugural seed-funding grants. All UT Knoxville students, regardless of academic discipline or degree program (PhD, master-level, or undergraduate), are eligible to apply. Solicitations will be made each fall and spring semester.

--- Sixty students have now confirmed their attendance in a new program in which students will be dually enrolled at UT Knoxville and Pellissippi State Community College (PSCC). The agreement formalizing the bridge program was signed last week by UT Knoxville Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek and PSCC President Allen Edwards.

--- A team of four UT Knoxville undergraduate students recently won the Third Annual IANA Logistics & Supply Chain Management Case Competition at the University of North Florida. This was the second time UT Knoxville participated in the competition.

--- Retail students at UT Knoxville will be among the best-prepared in the nation to enter the work world, thanks to the creation of a minor in retail technology and UT's unique access to one of the major software systems used in the industry. The retail technology minor—one of the first of its kind in the country—will allow students to take specialized computer-based courses that will help them walk into jobs ready to use the technology that's been transforming the industry in recent years.

Get Involved

--- The TeamVOLS Volunteer Service Office is beginning a donation drive to help people in the areas of Alabama hard hit by last week's tornadoes, especially Tuscaloosa near the University of Alabama. The largest current needs are toiletries (toothbrushes, combs, etc.), clothes of all sizes (especially pants and undergarments), non-perishable food (crackers, peanut butter, canned goods, etc.) and bottled water. Donations will be accepted in the TeamVOLS Office, 315-A University Center. Questions? E-mail [log in to unmask] or call 974-8481.

Important Deadlines

--- University of Tennessee campuses collide on June 20 and 21, when new researchers get together on the UT agricultural campus to present their animal and human health-related studies. Presenters will discuss biomedical, clinical, translational medicine, as well as public health (including exercise and nutrition sciences), food safety, and biomedical technologies. The deadline to submit an abstract to give a ten-minute oral presentation is Monday, May 2. All graduate students, postdocs, interns, residents, and research assistant professors are invited to submit. Details, plus the submission link, may be found at http://www.vet.utk.edu/research/symposium/.
