Dear Math Majors,
I have been discussing the MS in Math degree as an alternative to a
Masters in Education degree with some math majors who want to teach math
in public schools. For those of you who are interested in this
alternative, I want to bring to your attention a program in Tennessee for
prospective math teachers that is an alternate route to the usual
certification process. See
http://www.tennessee.gov/education/teachtn/doc/ComFellow.pdf
Many other states have, are creating, or are expanding, alternatives to
the usual certification route for people who have BS or higher degrees in
subject areas like math. Note that an MS in math or statistics has the
advantage that it prepares you for many excellent careers beyond high
school teaching, and further strengthens your skills in mathematics. Also,
the vast majority of students pursuing an MS in math are supported by a
teaching assistantship that pays for tuition and a living stipend, while
giving you valuable experience teaching at the college level. For those
who have excellent undergraduate records, the math department offers a
fifth year MS program, a description of which you may find in the
undergraduate catalog.
See http://www.teach-now.org/index.cfm for more info on the nationwide
situation.
