--- The Student Government Association will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. today to discuss an important campus safety issue that is now before the Tennessee General Assembly. SGA President Ross Rowland and immediate past president Tommy Jervis will discuss why campus is safer without weapons and will urge lawmakers to vote against legislation that would allow faculty and staff to carry guns. The group will gather at the Pedestrian Mall, near the UT Seal at Andy Holt Avenue and Volunteer Boulevard.

Good News

--- KUB can help UT students make their move easier with the "Start/Stop" utilities service function at http://www.kub.org. Whether it's a move to Knoxville or to a new house or apartment across town, UT students who are KUB customers can start or stop their utility service online from anywhere, anytime. Just go to http://www.kub.org and follow the Start/Stop link under Service Options on the home page. New visitors will need to register on the site to set up an account. Students even can select a date to start or stop service online, and will get a confirmation e-mail when the service request is submitted.

--- The Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies has announced the winners of the 2011-12 Jimmy and Dee Haslam Dissertation Fellowship and the 2011 Anne Marie Van Hook Memorial Summer Travel Fellowship for graduate students. The Haslam Dissertation Fellowship has been awarded to Meghan Worth, a graduate student in the Department of History. Meghan's dissertation studies the new kingdom established after the First Crusade, the twelfth-century Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. The Van Hook Fellowship has been awarded to Leah Giamalva, a graduate student in the Department of History. Leah's dissertation focuses on how Latin Christians sought to understand Islamic expansion in contrast to the contraction and decay of Western Christendom after the total loss of the crusader states.

--- Welcome Leader (WL) is a new leadership and mentoring opportunity for sophomores, juniors, and seniors to assist first-year students in their transition to UT. Each volunteer WL will serve as a mentor and guide to approximately 20-25 students and introduce them to campus through Welcome Week activities, August 13-20. In this volunteer position, the WLs will focus on providing a quality transitional experience for these students. This is a great opportunity to gain leadership experience and share your passion for UT with incoming students. For more info and to find the WL application form, visit http://activities.utk.edu/welcome-leaders/.

--- Senior Gift is an opportunity for UT seniors to take part in a long-standing tradition on campus. Since 1991, seniors have pledged their loyalty and exhibited their Volunteer pride by giving over $300,000 to scholarship endowments, UT academic programs, and permanent campus monuments. This year, seniors are challenged to make a gift of at least $55 to the College Fund. Seniors who donate $55 or more will have a personalized brick placed on the Senior Sidewalk in Circle Park. In addition, they will receive recognition cords to wear at graduation, recognition in their college's commencement program, and a special donor gift.
