--- April is Earth Month, and UT Knoxville is seeing green with a month's worth of events to celebrate. Departments from across the campus will participate, sponsoring lectures, film screenings and other activities.

--- Sister Helen Prejean, the internationally known anti-death-penalty activist whose work was made into a Hollywood film, will speak on campus during Human Rights Week, April 4-8. This week's events are sponsored by the UT Knoxville chapter of Amnesty International, the worldwide human rights organization, and the departments of Sociology and Religious Studies. The events will cover a variety of topics designed to bring awareness to human rights issues in the Knoxville community. Prejean's talk, "Dead Man Walking: The Journey Continues," is set for noon Friday, April 8, in the Shiloh Room of the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center. Good News

--- Do you have some courses that you would like to get out of the way this summer? UT is expanding its summer school program and is seeking upperclassmen who need critical courses to stay on track toward graduation. UT is offering scholarships equivalent to 15 percent of the tuition for in-state and out-of-state students who take 100- or 200-level courses. In addition, students currently receiving the Pledge, Promise, or Achieve the Dream scholarships will receive an additional 10 percent scholarship -- for a total of 25 percent of the cost of tuition – also for lower-division courses. --- Three UT Knoxville undergraduates have been named 2011 Barry M. Goldwater Scholars. Juniors Britta Johnson and Mark Walker will receive scholarships from the Goldwater Foundation for their final year at UT Knoxville, and sophomore Madelyn Crawford will receive a scholarship for her remaining two years. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships are awarded yearly to sophomores and juniors pursuing careers in research in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.

--- OIT is announcing Vault, a new email tool to send and receive large attachments. Vault is available for use by UT students, faculty, and staff. If you need to receive a large attachment from a non-UT account, the sender can register an account and send you the attachment. Learn more at http://vault.utk.edu.

--- Michael Handelsman has been named the faculty director of UT's Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships. Handelsman, a professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, will help students apply for nationally competitive awards such as the Fulbright, Goldwater, Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, Udall, and Gates-Cambridge scholarships.

--- Looking to introduce healthy habits into your life but don't know where to start? Plenty of information and ideas will be available during Wellness Week, starting today at UT Knoxville. Themed "Make Wellness Your Reality," UT Knoxville's Wellness Week gives the campus community the opportunity to attend and participate in a variety of health- and wellness-centered sessions. The week's activities center around the HealthBeat health fair on Wednesday, April 6, that features demonstrations, screenings and health information. --- Bobby C. Rogers will read poetry at 7 p.m. tonight in the Hodges Library Auditorium as part of the Writers in the Library series. Rogers is the author of "Paper Anniversary," from University of Pittsburgh Press. The book won the national Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize. --- Etiquette and business dinner, 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the Stokely Hospitaly Suite of the Haslam Business Building. Presenter: Mary Mahoney. The dinner also will address issues of etiquette unique to women. UT alumni from the Knoxville community will discuss their experiences as women in the workplace. This program is free for students and dinner will be provided. Students must pre-register to attend at http://sold.utk.edu/womensprogs/dinner/dinner_reg.php. Space is limited.

--- The Lambda Student Union will host a performance by storyteller/monologist Miss Coco Peru, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in the UC Auditorium. The Los Angeles Times called the show "wry and uncensored" and "a hilarious exorcism, with music, no less." The Lambda Student Union aims to promote communication between lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and straight ally students at UT.

--- Marilyn Brown, a former UT Knoxville professor of geography with a previous career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will be discussing improving energy efficiency in the industry sector. The event is free and open to the public. Brown, now a professor in the school of public policy at Georgia Tech University, will be speaking on "Lean Energy Approaches to Sustaining the U.S. Industrial Base" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in the Toyota Auditorium of the Baker Center.

Ready for the World Events

--- The Ready for the World Café helps celebrate Wellness Week this week with healthy fare from around the world. The good-for-you menu includes all-American summer salad, Cuban pork, Asian grilled tilapia with a plum glaze, Moroccan carrot-and-chickpea tagine, Italian roasted asparagus with balsamic reduction, Israeli couscous pilaf, and grilled Jamaican jerk chicken with mango chutney. The café is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each Monday through Thursday in the Hermitage Room on the third floor of the University Center. Diners pay $11 for the all-you-can-eat buffet or $9 for a plate of food to carry out.

Kenyan movie "Kibera Kid" will be screened at I-House Study Room from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Light snacks will also be served throughout the event.

International Coffee House Series- HIV Test
A free confidential HIV test will be provided at the International House by a professional medical organization. Information about HIV tests and AIDS will be provided.

Wednesday, April 6:
Kenyan Culture Night:
Learn and experience Kenya and Kenyan culture. Enjoy authentic Kenyan cuisine and cultural presentations and performances from natives. Venue: I-House Great Room, 6:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the I-House front desk. Costs are $5 for students, $6 for faculty and staff, $7 for community members, and $2 for I-House club card members.

--- In the Cherokee language, "anadasgisi" means "they are gathering." The Native American Student Association and UT Knoxville are hosting "Anadasgisi -- The Gathering of International Natives," a traditional powwow featuring performers from across the globe on April 8 and 9 at various locations around campus. The event will begin on Friday, April 8 at 6:45 p.m. in the Humanities Amphitheater with an open discussion with Principal Chief Michell Hicks of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, followed by a presentation of the Aztec Fire Dance. The event will continue on Saturday, April 9 at 10:15 a.m. with the Grand Entry of Performers in Circle Park. The day ends with a performance from the Samoan Fire Dancers at 8 p.m. Admission to "Anadasgisi" is free and open to the public.
