Several enhancements have been made to increase the School's Web presence, as well as to feature some of the exciting things SILS alumni are accomplishing in the working world. BAKER & TAYLOR GIFT PROVIDES INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS Thanks to a gift from leading worldwide book distributor Baker & Taylor, two SILS students will have the opportunity to study in Europe this summer. Elizabeth Davidson and Jacqueline Chapman are the recipients of the scholarships, which include funding to attend the School's two-week summer seminars, one to Prague and one to London.

"The university and its digital libraries. A tale in three parts" was the topic of the 2011 sixth annual OCLC/Frederick G. Kilgour Lecture in Information and Library Science held on Monday, March 21, 2011. The lecture featured Dr. Daniel Greenstein, vice provost for Academic Planning, Programs and Coordination at the University of California's Office of the President, who presented to a standing room only crowd in the Wilson Library.

SOCIAL MEDIA IN GOVERNMENT SEMINAR VIDEO NOW AVAILABLE SILS and the School of Government at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill held a day-long seminar called, "Curation of Social Media as a Public Asset" on Jan. 21, 2011. UNC GRADUATE PROGRAMS RANKED BY "U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT"
The latest rankings for "America's Best Graduate Schools" were released March 15, 2011 by "US News & World Report." Besides new rankings in business, education, engineering, law and medicine (these are ranked annually), new this year are rankings for public health and several nursing areas in the health disciplines. SILS retains its #1 ranking in the nation tied with University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and it is the only school ranked #1 on the UNC at Chapel Hill campus. Library and Information Studies programs were last ranked in 2009 for the 2010 edition of the magazine. In addition to placing #1 overall, SILS placed in six of the specialty areas.

DR. RYAN SHAW JOINS SILS FACULTY
SILS welcomed Dr. Ryan Shaw, as assistant professor to the faculty on January 1, 2011. Shaw comes to SILS from the University of California, Berkeley where he received his Ph.D. in Information Management and Systems with a Designated Emphasis in New Media at the School of Information. The title of his dissertation was, "Events and Periods as Concepts for Organizing Historical Knowledge."

KAITLYN MURPHY JOINS SILS AS UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT SERVICES MANAGER The School of Information and Library Science welcomed Kaitlyn Murphy as its undergraduate student services manager this semester. ERIC OBERSHAW - SILS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION'S "FEATURED ALUMNUS"
School of Information and Library Science alumnus Eric Obershaw was selected as the SILS Alumni Association's "Featured Alumnus." Since 2001, when he graduated with an MSLS from SILS, Obershaw has worked in the Business Information Services group at Morgan Stanley in Japan.

DAVID GOBLE RECEIVES JOHN N. OLSGAARD DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
David Goble (MSLS '94), director of the South Carolina State Library and alumnus of the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was presented with the University of South Carolina School of Library and Information Science's John N. Olsgaard Distinguished Service Award on April 7, 2011. The award recognizes an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the School.

SILS ALUMNUS MEGAN PEREZ PUBLISHES "THE NEW GRADUATE EXPERIENCE"
Megan Perez (MSLS '07) has published a book with Libraries Unlimited, titled "The New Graduate Experience." The book features contributions from 25 authors representing more than 15 different institutions from around the United States and Canada. They include personnel and staff development officers, deans, assistant professors, directors, program managers, department heads and subject librarians.

SILS DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS, LARRY ALFORD, NAMED CHIEF LIBRARIAN AT UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO Larry Alford, SILS alumnus (MSLS '77) and current vice provost for Libraries, university librarian and dean of University Libraries at Temple University, has been named the chief librarian at the University of Toronto. Alford is set to begin his new seven-year appointment Aug. 1, 2011.

"NY TIMES" FEATURES SILS ALUMNA WHO LOCATED THOMAS JEFFERSON'S BOOKS
With a team of other scholars working on the Thomas Jefferson Libraries project and the help of Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) librarians, SILS alumna Endrina Tay (MSLS '02) and her team were able to track down more than 70 of Jefferson's books in a WUSTL library that had received them from a private donor. When news of the story broke, it was covered by New York Times columnist Sam Roberts in a story entitled, "A Founding Father's Books Turn Up."

MICHELLE LANGSTON'S WEB DESGIN OF "CARRBORO CITIZEN" BEST IN STATE SILS alumna, Michelle Langston (MSIS '10), has been recognized for her role in designing the Web site for the Carrboro Citizen that was named best in the state by the North Carolina Press Association. The Carrboro Citizen won a set of awards that recognize excellence in design and content of Web sites and in feature and editorial writing for markets with a circulation of 3,500 to 10,000 readers.

AMY PATEE'S BOOK, "READING THE ADOLESCENT ROMANCE: SWEET VALLEY HIGH AND THE POPULAR YOUNG ADULT ROMANCE NOVEL"
"Reading the Adolescent Romance: Sweet Valley High and the Popular Young Adult Romance Novel" is a recent book written by SILS alumna Amy Pattee (Ph.D. '04). The book, which is an extension of Pattee's dissertation work at SILS, focuses on Francine Pascal's popular series, Sweet Valley High.

JENNIFER LOHMANN IS ROMANCE WRITERS OF AMERICA LIBRARIAN OF THE YEAR
Jennifer Lohmann (MSLS '06) was named Librarian of the Year by the Romance Writers of America (RWA), a professional organization consisting of over 10,000 romance writers and publishing professionals whose work is closely tied to the romance book industry.

SILS ALUMNA NAMED SENIOR FACULTY TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST AT NYU
Last fall, Meredith Rendall (MSLS '07) was named senior faculty technology specialist at New York University (NYU). Currently, she leads policy development for NYU's local image repository and is in charge of establishing collection management protocols and streamlining content for NYU's Luna Insight image database.

DEAN MARCHIONINI APPOINTED TO NATIONAL PCAST HIT REPORT WORKGROUP
Dr. Gary Marchionini, SILS dean and Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished professor, was appointed to serve on the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) Health Information Technology (HIT) Report Workgroup. The PCAST Workgroup is under the auspices of the Federal Advisory Committees of the HIT Standards Committee and the HIT Policy Committee that advise David Blumenthal, the National Coordinator for Health IT.

DEAN MARCHIONINI PRESENTS RANGANATHAN MEMORIAL LECTURES AND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN INDIA
"People, Culture and 21st Century Libraries" was the theme of several presentations Dr. Gary Marchionini, SILS dean and Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor, delivered during his travels to India this spring semester. He was an invited speaker for three Ranganathan Memorial Lectures in Bangalore. In addition, Marchionini was the opening keynote speaker at the International Conference on Digital Libraries and Knowledge Management hosted by the Management Development Institute (MDI) in Gurgaon, a city outside of Delhi, where he presented "The Transformation of Libraries as Institutions."

North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries has selected the new fellows for next fall, two of which are SILS students. Beginning this summer, Charlie Morris (MSIS '11) and Mike Nutt (MSIS '11) will start their two-year term appointments as NCSU Libraries Fellows. During that time, Morris and Nutt will be working on a variety of projects related to academic librarianship at North Carolina State University.

STUDENTS CREATE AND EAT "BOOKS" IN HONOR OF INTERNATIONAL EDIBLE BOOK FESTIVAL
Since its creation in 2000, the International Edible Book Festival has been celebrated on April 1st in countries around the world, from Morocco to New Zealand. This year, members of the School of Information and Library Science student organization, Art and Museum Library and Information Student Society (AMLISS), participated by creating edible books in the student lounge and sharing the tasty "pages" with fellow students and faculty.

STUDENT TAPPED BY UNC'S OLDEST, MOST PRESTIGIOUS HONOR SOCIETY
Ashlee Edwards, a senior BSIS and English major from New York, NY, was recently inducted into UNC at Chapel Hill's legendary Order of the Golden Fleece. Taking its symbolism and organizational structure from the classical story of Jason and the Argonauts, who quested tirelessly for a mythic golden fleece, the Order was founded in 1904 and is the most prestigious honor society on campus.

Justin Brinegar (BSIS '11) received a $298 travel award from The Office for Undergraduate Research to attend the 2011 iConference in Seattle, WA. While at the iConference, Brinegar delivered a 20 minute presentation on a paper based on his and postdoctoral fellow and adjunct professor Rob Capra's research titled, "Managing Music Across Multiple Devices and Computers."
