Dear Math Honors students,
I have heard that unfortunately the renewal of our Honors Program grant
was the second highest proposal that was *not* funded (about 10% of more
than 30 proposals were funded). Encouraged by this close call, we will be
applying again, addressing some of the concerns given by the reviewers.
Here is the situation concerning scholarships for next year: We currently
have enough funds left over in our grant to pay scholarships of $3000-4000
next year, depending on the number of students. The university also
promised "cost sharing" of a significant number of scholarships in the
event the grant is not renewed. However, I have to ask permission from the
NSF to extend the grant for a year and use the left over funds for
scholarships. I will be doing so this week, but it may be weeks before I
get an answer. If for some reason that request is turned down then I will
talk to the university about the cost sharing. So the short story is, it
seems highly likely that there will be significant scholarships for honors
students next year, but I can't make firm promises right now until I have
written confirmation from the NSF or the university.
