Dear math students,
The "Allen Medal Competition" is a calculus competition open to first
year UT students (more on eligibility below) given by the Math
Department every year. The competition is an exam with very
challenging questions involving the material from 141/142 and below.
The competition this year will be on March 22 (Tuesday), from 5pm to
7pm at Ayres 112.
Freshman and first year UT students can take the exam. (So, if you
are not a freshman due to AP credit, but this is your first year of
college, you *can* take. Otherwise, only freshman can take it.)
The first prize has been US$350.00 and a medal and the second
US$200.00, but I still need to confirm these values.
Students should sign up with Tabitha Rainwater at the front desk of
the Math Department (Ayres 227) by 03/21, i.e., the day before the
exam.
Please pass this along to any colleague who is eligible and might be
interested. Talented first year students from 241/247 should be
especially encouraged. Students from 142/148 might have a *very*
slight disadvantage, as there might be a problem on material that
might not have seen yet in class. Students from 141/147 have a larger
disadvantage, as more problems might be on material not covered. On
the other hand, from past experience, solving two or three problems
entirely can yield a first or second prize. (Students from 141/147
have won before.)
If you have any question, don't hesitate to contact us.
Best regards,
The Allen Medal Committee
(Joan Lind and Luis Finotti)
