--- ARAMARK, the university's dining services operator, is asking students to give their feedback on campus dining. The survey is available at http://www.college-survey.com/tenn/.
--- OIT will be making infrastructure improvements during the last few days of Spring Break. The upgrade project will interrupt many services beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, March 18, until early Sunday, March 20. Services that will be affected include but are not limited to online registration, advising and financial services through MyUTK (Banner and Circle Park Online) and student e-mail hosted by Tmail. Online@UT (Blackboard) will be available, but from an alternate website, https://blackboard.utk.edu/webapps/login/. Many Web pages hosted by the utk.edu and tennessee.edu domains, including most departmental sites, the OIT website and personal Web pages, may also be offline. The Web page for changing your password will not be available, nor will the university's online faculty, staff and student directory. The upgrade will also impact the wired and wireless network access in many campus buildings. A few campus buildings also will be without telephone and voice mail service. A!

Good News
--- The Center for International Education (CIE) at UT Knoxville has awarded $500 scholarships to 200 students who will be studying abroad during mini-term or summer 2011. These scholarships came from the J. Wallace and Katie Dean Endowment and the CIE Scholarship Fund, which comes from the $10-per-year fee that undergraduates pay.

--- Christine Jessel has joined the University of Tennessee's public radio station WUOT 91.9 FM as an education reporter/producer. Jessel's two-year appointment is funded through a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that created a Local Journalism Center called the Southern Regional Education Desk.

--- Summer school provides a great way to take care of those general education courses. This summer, if you take a lower-division course (100 or 200 level), you will automatically receive a scholarship equivalent to 15 percent of the tuition for those classes. --- The Executive MBA for Strategic Leadership program at UT Knoxville is one of the 50 best executive MBA programs in North America, according to the Poets & Quants for Executives ranking. This composite ranking measures the overall reputation of executive MBA programs by considering the latest ratings from Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and U.S. News & World Report. --- Ralph Nader, once dubbed one of the most influential figures in the United States, will speak on campus at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at the Cox Auditorium in the Alumni Memorial Building.

--- Marco Institute symposium, "Gardens, Real and Imagined," March 10-12 in the Baker Center. The symposium will feature landscape historians, art historians and literary scholars exploring the form, function, philosophy and artistic depiction of medieval and early modern gardens. Deirdre Larkin, horticulturist for The Cloisters, the branch of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe, will deliver the keynote address, “Hortus Redivivius: The Medieval Garden Recreated,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, in the Baker Center. All events are free and open to the public.

--- The UT Police Department will host a scholarship fundraiser this spring to assist children of UTPD staff and retirees attend UT Knoxville. The fifth annual UTPD Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 20, at the Three Ridges Golf Course. Team registrations received prior to March 15 will receive 10 percent off of the entrance fee.

--- John Walker Lindh, a 20-year-old American from California, was captured while fighting for the Taliban in December 2001. He was indicted by a federal grand jury on 10 charges. It became known as the case of the "American Taliban." Lindh's attorney, James J. Brosnahan, will speak at noon on Tuesday, March 22, in room 132 of the College of Law building.

--- Members of the Chancellor's Honors Program or other departmental or specialized honors programs are invited to present their research to the Honors Symposium on Saturday, March 26. The day-long symposium, the second to be held, will feature the 10- to 15-minute presentations by 30 or more honors students. Applications to present are due by 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, in the main office of the Chancellor's Honors Program, Melrose Hall F-101. --- Delta Zeta sorority's Annual Turtle Tug Competition will be held on April 1 at Fiji Island. The competition is a tug-of-war over a pool of green Jell-O, with other field games and free food as well. All student organizations are welcome and encouraged to participate in this afternoon of fun and games to benefit Delta Zeta's philanthropy. Important Deadlines
--- The application deadline for the W.K. McClure Scholarship for the Study of World Affairs is 5 p.m. Friday, March 11. The scholarship offers UT Knoxville students financial awards up to $5,000 to support study, research or creative projects abroad aimed at enhancing and promoting education for world responsibility. The funds can be applied to any project which offers the potential for developing knowledge relative to significant issues or problems related to global public affairs and the reduction of international conflict, primarily through legal, cultural, political, economic, social and scientific studies. --- This is the last week to apply for the Honors Ambassadors program. Honors Ambassadors help recruit the top academic students to the University of Tennessee Chancellor's Honors Program. Once you are a rising honors sophomore, you can apply to speak at alumni network parties, assist with honors invitationals, host prospective honors student tours, work with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and more. Ready for the World Events
--- Italian influences add some zest to the Ready for the World Café menu this week. The buffet will include pesto chicken Florentine; roasted asparagus salad with goat cheese and bread crumbs; cola chops; apple, pecan, cranberry and avocado spinach salad with balsamic dressing; baked tilapia with tomato and basil; three-grain pilaf; and lasagna rolls. The café is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each Monday through Thursday in the Hermitage Room on the third floor of the University Center. Note: The café will be closed Wednesday, March 9, for a private function. Diners pay $11 for the all-you-can-eat buffet or $9 for a plate of food to carry out.

Turkish Movie Night -- The Turkish movie "Vizontele" will be screened in the I-House Study Room. Light snacks will also be served throughout the event.

Turkish Coffee House -- The International House presents a Turkish cooking demonstration on Tuesday, March 8. Native Turkish people will teach you to cook delicious Turkish food. Traditional Turkish tea and light snacks will be served.

Price: $2 for Students; $3 for Faculty & Staff; $4 for Community; Free for I-House Club members.
Wednesday, March 9, 2011:
Turkish Culture Night:
Come join us on Wednesday, March 9 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to learn and experience Turkey and Turkish culture. We will have an authentic Turkish meal prepared for you, and cultural presentations from native Turkish and American perspectives. Moreover, you will get to witness a traditional Turkish tattoo-and-music experience just like what you would see in Turkey! Venue: I-House Great Room. Tickets are on sale at the I-House front desk. Costs are $5 for students, $6 for faculty and staff, $7 for community members, and $2 for I-House club card members.

--- TeamVOLS is taking food donations for the Second Harvest Foodbank of Knoxville! During the flashfloods, Second Harvest lost nearly $150,000 worth of products. Over 188 schools in East TN rely on Second Harvest for their services, meaning 8,000 schoolchildren may not receive food to sustain them in the coming weeks.Bring food donations to the TeamVOLS office in UC Room 315A or make a monetary donation online at : http://www.secondharvestknox.com/index.php
