Good News

--- UT Knoxville provides an academically strong education at an affordable price, according to The Princeton Review's "Best Value Colleges for 2011" list, which ranked UT among the 50 best values in higher education. The 50 public and 50 private colleges and universities were selected from more than 650 public and private colleges and universities. The Princeton Review describes UT Knoxville as a "large, dynamic" and "very affordable" university with "a vibrant academic and social atmosphere." The profile also highlights the "excellent research facilities" and that with such a diverse student life, "it's a school that has something to offer everyone."

--- Jessie Janeshek will read from her just-published first book of poetry, "Invisible Mink," tonight at 7 p.m. in the Mary E. Greer Room, 258 Hodges Library. Cupcakes and coffee will be served. Janeshek teaches in the UT English Department, where she earned a doctorate in 2010.

--- The 3rd Annual Diversity Job Fair will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, in the University Center ballroom. The event is designed for students from all populations and diverse backgrounds. --- The UT College Republicans will host Knoxville mayoral candidate Marilyn Roddy, 6:30 p.m. tomorrow in the UC Shiloh Room. Roddy has served on the Knoxville City Council for 6 1/2 years and is running to fill the vacancy left when Bill Haslam was elected Tennessee governor. The meeting is open to the public and snacks will be provided.

--- The Public Relations Student Society of America will host a resume critique workshop, 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Scripps Lab on the 4th floor of the Communications Building. Students will have the opportunity to have their resumes looked at and critiqued by local public relations professionals. There will also be free food. --- The second event of Women's HERstory Month is "The Week Wanda Gets a Checkup," a lecture presentation by Stacy Malkan, co-founder of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and author of the award-winning book, "Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry." Stacy Malkan will be in the UC Auditorium on Wednesday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. Educational and disturbing, her lecture will provide insightful information on the products we use every day.

--- The University Studies interdisciplinary program's  Spirituality and Critical Inquiry Colloquy is hosting a Veritas Forum, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in the UC Auditorium. The UT Ad Club and AMA are hosting a panel discussion with professionals from local and regional ad agencies, media outlets and marketing firms at 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 4, in the UC Hermitage room. The participants include David Bohan, CEO of Bohan Advertising in Nashville, Susie Norris, CEO and Creative Director of Orange Apple Branding Boutique, Jeff Cueller, Director of Business Development at AC Entertainment, and Michael Goeke and Chris Casteel of the Knoxville News Sentinel. --- "Gardens, Real and Imagined" is the topic of the annual Marco Symposium, hosted by UT's Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, March 10-12 at the Baker Center. The symposium will feature landscape historians, art historians and literary scholars exploring the form, function, philosophy and artistic depiction of medieval and early modern gardens. Deirdre Larkin, horticulturist for The Cloisters, the branch of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe, will deliver the keynote address, "Hortus Redivivius: The Medieval Garden Recreated," at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10. All events are free and open to the public.

Important Deadlines

--- The deadline for applying to become a Baker Policy Scholar has been extended to March 11, 2011. Rising UT juniors and seniors from all academic majors are eligible to apply for annual Baker Policy Scholar appointments with the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy. Scholars conduct research and assist the Baker Center in its role as a "think tank" for generating innovative ideas and publishing best practices for application in the world of public policy.

Ready for the World Events

--- Dishes from Korea, Japan and China highlight the menu this week at the Ready for the World Café. The menu includes Korean beef bulgogi (Korean barbecued beef), avocado chicken stir fry, vegetable lo mein, cod filets in an orange sauce, sesame steamed vegetables, shieldzini (Japanese cucumber salad) and sticky white rice. The café is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each Monday through Thursday in the Hermitage Room on the third floor of the University Center. Diners pay $11 for the all-you-can-eat buffet or $9 for a plate of food to carry out.

--- I-House events for this week: Global Issues discussion program on the Israel/Palestine situation, plus a screening of the documentary film "Occupation 101," 6:30 - 8:30 tonight. Japanese Coffee House, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. tomorrow. Learn how to make "mochi" from native Japanese students. Tickets $2 for students, $3 for faculty and staff, $4 for the public and free for I-House Club members. Roadtrip to Atlanta, including the Atlanta Aquarium and a CNN studio tour, Saturday, March 5.
