Dear Math Students,
Each summer there are summer research programs in mathematics (and other
areas) offered throughout the country. Many of these programs are National
Science Foundation programs called REUs (Research Experiences for
Undergraduates). These programs are often highly competitive, but our
students have been very successful in the past in being accepted by these
programs. Generally they pay a good stipend ($400-500 per week), and many
offer housing and travel funding. Some application deadlines are rapidly
approaching, and so if you are interested in applying, I urge you to look
into it soon. If you are interested in going on to graduate school, a high
quality research program can definitely help prepare you and improve your
chances of getting an assistantship at a top notch university. Here are a
couple of resources to help you find programs. You can also just google
math summer programs and see what comes up.

(Note, the above site has a feature that will mass e-mail directors of
programs. This is a really bad idea, since many directors don't have the
resources to respond. Instead, you should browse the websites and see what
you find suitable.)
