Students,
Please see the message below about the Nashville Teaching Fellows Program.
It gives an employment opportunity for a graduating math major to earn a
teaching license, without having a Bachelor's degree in education.
Thank you,
-Mike Frazier

Who will take your classes in five years?
The achievement gap is real.
In a recent study of Metro Nashville high school students, 28% of all
students ranked Below Basic in high school math targets. Looking only
at African-American students, that number jumped to 35% Below Basic.
Looking only at white students, the percentage of Below Basic is only
18%.* The achievement gap in Nashville is real. *From the State of
Tennessee Department of Education Report Card for Davidson County
Schools 2010.
Nashville Teaching Fellows is a program designed to bring effective
teachers to all students in Metro with a goal of closing the achievement
gap in our city. We specifically seek applicants whose bachelor's
degree is not in Education , but who want to teach full time while
earning a teaching license and moving into a long-term teaching career.
Nashville's greatest need for teachers is in middle and high school
mathematics. If you know someone who would be an excellent teacher,
please share this information by forwarding the below and encouraging
them to apply. Applications submitted by our priority deadline of
January 17, 2011 will receive priority for interview slots throughout
the spring.
What is Nashville Teaching Fellows?
The Nashville Teaching Fellows program is an initiative of Metro
Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) which recruits, selects, and trains
high-achieving professionals and recent college graduates from all
backgrounds to teach in critical shortage subject areas and schools. It
seeks to close the achievement gap in Nashville's schools and ensure
that every child, regardless of background, has excellent teachers.
Nashville Teaching Fellows (NTF) is unique because it seeks candidates
who want to make a long-term career change to education. We help
Fellows achieve that goal by providing intense pre-service training, and
by working with them to find full-time teaching positions in MNPS. NTF
is different from other alternative route licensure programs because
Fellows teach full time in their own classroom and earn salary and
benefits as full time MNPS employees while they are also taking evening
classes offered by NTF to pursue their Tennessee teaching license.
Who is Nashville Teaching Fellows looking for?
We are looking for applicants who realize that one teacher's influence
can change the possibilities for numerous students. We want people who
are leaders in their community and who possess the commitment,
flexibility, and drive necessary to achieve success in the classroom. We
want professionals, recent college graduates, parents, and individuals
who want to be the difference in Nashville's schools. There is no
specific type of applicant that NTF is looking for, but we want
candidates who will use their experience and energy to ensure that all
of our students excel academically.
Previous coursework in education is not required, but candidates must:
* Have a Bachelor's degree (conferred by June 2011)
