NOTICE OF VACANCY

October 14, 2010

TITLE: Associate Dean of University Libraries and Director of the Health
Sciences Library

LOCATION: Health Sciences Library

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The University of Washington Libraries invites applications and
nominations for the position of Associate Dean of University Libraries
and Director of the Health Sciences Library. This is an exceptional
opportunity to shape major programs, strategic directions, and service
initiatives for one of the nation’s premier health sciences libraries.
The Libraries is an integral partner in the education, research,
clinical care, and service mission of the University. It is a national
leader in the development and application of innovative strategies and
technologies to meet information and research needs. The Health Sciences
Library supports the education, research, and clinical programs of the 6
UW health science schools: Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy,
Public Health, and Social Work; 2 academic medical centers and a network
of clinics, as well as the wider interdisciplinary biomedical community
of the University and the citizens of the state of Washington.

The UW ranks 2nd among universities in the amount of federal grant and
research dollars received with over 1 billion dollars in total research
funding. The UW School of Medicine is ranked #1 in the U.S. News & World
Report rankings in primary care (also #1 in family medicine and rural
medicine subspecialties) and #6 in research. The UW School of Nursing is
ranked #1 among nursing schools and the School of Public Health is
ranked #4 among public health programs. The UW hospitals are also highly
rated for patient care.

Reporting to the Dean of University Libraries, the Associate Dean and
Director is responsible for strategic visioning, policy and program
development, operations and personnel, and overall innovation and
excellence in the Health Sciences Library. The Associate Dean and
Director contributes to Libraries-wide leadership for transformational
and user-centered research services; educational and clinical programs;
assessment; and marketing of services. The Associate Dean and Director
serves on the Libraries Cabinet; works closely with other senior leaders
to ensure services and collections responsive to the needs of users;
actively contributes to the ongoing stewardship and strategic directions
of the Libraries; develops staff at all levels; nurtures an inclusive
environment that supports diversity; and provides leadership at local,
state, regional, national, and international levels. The Associate Dean
and Director also serves as Director and Principal Investigator of the
National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM), Pacific Northwest
Region, and two NNLM centers: the Outreach Evaluation Resource Center
and the Web Services Technology Operations Center.

The UW School of Medicine is home to a unique regional medical education
program known as WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho). As
the only medical school in these five states, the UW School of Medicine
guarantees a number of slots in the entering class for students from
each of these states. These students complete their 1st year at their
home institution, their 2nd year at the UW in Seattle, and their 3rd and
4th years at clerkships and clinical sites throughout the northwest
region. The Health Sciences Libraries provides access and services to
these students, faculty, staff, and preceptors throughout all five states.

The UW Libraries is one library serving three campuses and ranks 13th
overall among the 114 North American academic libraries that are members
of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), and 6th among public
institutions in the U.S after Michigan, UC Berkeley, Penn State, UCLA,
and Texas. The University Libraries operates in a dynamic, collaborative
environment to provide advanced networked resources, responsive
collections, with a superlative staff, and excellent user-centered
services to a three-campus university of more than 48,000 students
(including over 12,500 graduate/professional students), 4,000 faculty,
and 27,600 total staff.

The Libraries has transformed how it acquires and provides knowledge
resources and collections; supports users both on and off campus; and
delivers services and content any time and any place. The collections
include a large and growing digital library, over 7 million cataloged
volumes and more than 60,000 currently received serial titles. The
Health Sciences Library has over 170,000 monograph titles and over 3,500
current serial subscriptions. The Health Sciences Library has an annual
budget of $4.7 million, plus $1.8 million in annual grant and contract
expenditures; a staff of 19 librarians and 21 professional, technical,
and support staff. The Health Sciences Library has a well-established
departmental liaison program throughout the health sciences schools and
has a strong clinical librarian presence.

The Libraries is a partner with the ALA-accredited Information School,
which has expanded substantially graduate and undergraduate programs,
and offers a top ranked concentration in health sciences librarianship.
The Health Sciences Libraries works closely with the UW Department of
Medical Education and Biomedical Informatics. The Libraries is a member
of the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of Academic
Health Sciences Libraries, OCLC, the Greater Western Library Alliance,
