Each year the Los Alamos National Lab in New Mexico hires around 1000-1500
students at various levels to work as interns in pure and applied math, as
well as other scientific fields. These internships provide an excellent
path to work at the lab or other places in industry--40% of the lab's
employees started as student interns. Hiring for internships generally
takes place in January. At the Junior Colloquium today, Dr. Sara Del Valle
from LANL will talk about careers at the lab. If you can't make the JC,
then I suggest that you visit
www.lanl.gov/education/jumpstart
for more information.
Dr. Del Valle told me that, in addition to having a strong academic
record, it can help to make contact with someone at the lab in the area in
which you are interested.
