--- The Volapalooza 2011 survey is now available. The Campus Entertainment Board invites students, faculty and staff to take part in a short survey to help determine potential artists for Volapalooza 2011. --- The lecture featuring Jack Prelutsky, the nation's first Children's Poet Laureate, which had been scheduled for 5 p.m. today in West High School Auditorium, has been canceled due to the poet's continuing health problems. UT's Center for Children's & Young Adult Literature was sponsoring the event along with the Knox County Public Library and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

--- The Baker Center and the Honors Events Committee are joining forces for a Pizza and Politics roundtable discussion of Tennessee's current gubernatorial race. Watch clips from Thursday's gubernatorial debate held on campus and discuss current issues facing Tennessee's new executive. --- Dr. Elizabeth Strand, director of veterinary social work at the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, will teach a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course this fall. The eight week class begins Monday, Oct. 18, and will be held one night a week. A free orientation session for potential participants will be held Thursday, Oct. 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in room A205 at the veterinary college on the UT agricultural campus. --- Poet, novelist and essayist Marge Piercy will read her poems and chat with the public next week in Knoxville. Piercy will read from her work "The Art of Blessing the Day: Poems of Ritual and Remembrance," at Temple Beth El of Knoxville, 3037 Kingston Pike, at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17. On Monday, Oct. 18, she will host an informal author chat from 3 to 4 p.m. at 1210-1211 McClung Tower and will present "Poetry of Jewish Identity, a reading" in the University Center auditorium at 7 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

--- 2010 VolAware Street Fair --- The annual VolAware Stomp Out Stigma Concert and Street Fair are this Tuesday and Wednesday. The events aim to raise awareness for mental health issues on our campus. VolAware is UT's mental health awareness, wellness and suicide prevention campaign. Stomp Out Stigma begins at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, in Presidential Courtyard. Local recording artist JayStorm will perform, and organizations from the UT chapter of the National Pan-Hellenic Council will participate in a "stroll-off competition." The fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, and will give students and the community the chance to meet mental health professionals and learn about services on campus and in the community. Students attending the fair will be given participation certificates that they can use for credit in certain classes. Those who participate in QPR suicide-prevention training and get signatures from visiting a set number of booths will be enter!

Ready for the World Events

--- UT's "Give Haiti Hope" student organization will host two guest speakers on Saturday, Oct. 16. Jordan Pyda, a medical student who spent two years living and working in rural Haiti, and Tatiana Therosme, a psychologist working for Partners in Health in Haiti during the earthquake, will be holding an informal discussion on human rights and health care in developing nations. This discussion is taking place at 3:30 p.m. in the UC Crest Room and all are welcome to attend. There is no admission fee. For more information, contact Give Haiti Hope at [log in to unmask]
