Special

--- The Bursar's Office will be closed from Oct. 25 to Nov. 5 for renovation work. During that time, a cashier from the Bursar's Office will be located in the Registrar's Office, 202 Student Services Building, to help anyone who needs to make a payment. The remainder of the Bursar's Office staff will temporarily move to P207 Andy Holt Tower. For more info call 974-4495.

--- Career Services is hiring new Peer Career Advisors for Spring 2010. Peer career advisors are trained and supervised paraprofessionals who provide career assistance to other students through UT Career Services. Responsibilities include critiquing resumes, assisting students with the use of the Career Resource Center, job search strategies, interview skills and promoting UT Career Services. Information session set for 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, in Career Services, 100 Dunford Hall.

--- This year's Open Access Week will be marked by a series of events in Hodges Library on making scholarly literature digital, online, and free of charge to users. The week kicks off at noon today with a keynote address by Harold Varmus, Nobel Prize-winning scientist and director of the U.S. National Cancer Institute. Hear the student perspective on Thursday with a webcast of "The Digital Natives are Getting Restless" and the screening of award-winning student videos promoting the idea of open access. --- Poet Marge Piercy will hold an informal author chat from 3 to 4 p.m. today in 1210-1211 McClung Tower. Piercy will then present "Poetry of Jewish Identify, a reading" at 7 p.m. tonight in the University Center auditorium. Both events are free and open to the public.

--- The SGA Diversity Affairs Committee and the Mu Zeta chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority present "The Rant," 7 p.m. tonight in the UC Hermitage Room. "The Rant" is a forum-based program to discuss issues of racism on campus. Free and open to the public.

--- Screening of Native American film, "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee," 6:30 p.m. tomorrow in 253 Hodges Library. Sponsored by the UT Native American Student Association. Popcorn and drinks will be provided. The event is free and open to everyone interested in watching a great film and learning about Native American culture.

--- Stacy Prowell, UT associate professor and chief cybersecurity research scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will speak about computer network security tomorrow night at the Baker Center. Prowell's presentation, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. in the Toyota Auditorium.

--- "Magic of Chemistry Show" featuring Al Hazari, UT director of labs and lecturer in chemistry, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, in 555 Dabney-Buehler Hall. The one-hour show is free and open to anyone, young or old. Part of National Chemistry Week, the show is both entertaining and educational. While Hazari conducts exciting and often explosive demonstrations, he unravels the mystery of how everyday items, such as diapers or cleaning supplies, work.

--- Traditional and modern Chinese dance performers, the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, will create a theatrical feast for the public at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at the Clarence Brown Theatre.  This event is co-sponsored by the Cultural Attractions Committee and the International House. Tickets are $5 for UT students, $20 for UT faculty and staff and $25 for general admission. Tickets to the event can be purchased online at http://knoxvilletickets.com/ or at any Tickets Unlimited outlet. They also can be purchased at the ticket office in UT's Thompson-Boling Arena. UT students, faculty, and staff may purchase tickets at the Central Ticket Office in the University Center on campus. 

--- Looking for a job or an internship in advertising or marketing? Guest speaker David Avery, Senior VP of The Tombras Group will speak to students seeking a career or internship in advertising and will address topics such as networking, internships and blogging. --- Dance Marathon band party fundraiser featuring Jaystorm, 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20 at Tin Roof on the strip. $5 admission. Buy your tickets at the door or before the event at Presidential Courtyard or the Pedestrian Walkway. All proceeds go to help the children and families at East Tennessee Children's Hospital.

--- The UT Women's Coordinating Council presents "Sex Signals," a program that addresses the topic of sexual assault and date rape. The event is Monday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the UC Auditorium. Mixing improvisational comedy, education, and audience interaction, Sex Signals provokes discussions about dating, sex, and the issue of consent. The 75-minute, two-person play begins with an irreverent and funny look at the awkwardness of dating, with each actor representing their gender's perspective. Free and open to the public.

--- The office of Student Orientation & Leadership Development is looking for a new group of student leaders to serve as Orientation Leaders, Leadership Guides, and Ignite Team Leaders for 2011. Important Deadlines

--- Wednesday, Oct. 27, is the deadline to submit your application to Teach for America, a national non-profit organization that is working to change education in the United States. Overall, only 1 in 10 students growing up in poverty will graduate from college. You can work to change this statistic by teaching for two years in a low-income community. These positions include full salary, benefits, and $10,700 in funds for postgraduate education. Learn more at http://teachforamerica.org/.

Ready for the World Events

--- The International House is celebrating China Week this week with a series of events: 
1) Joint forum on China, 7 p.m. tonight. Students from UT and Shanghai University will discuss current events in China. Free and open to the public. 
2) Chinese lamp and calligraphy night, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19. Learn how to make Chinese paper lanterns and take a calligraphy lesson. Snacks will be available. Tickets $2 for students, $3 for faculty and staff, $4 for the general public.
3) Chinese culture night, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20. There will be authentic Chinese food, Chinese dancing, Er'hu performances, cultural presentations, Chinese traditional singing and contemporary singing and more. Tickets $5 for students, $6 for faculty and staff, $7 for the general public. For more info call 974-4453.

This Week in SGA

--- The SGA Volunteer Services Committee is hosting Campus Chest Percentage Night at Moe's on the Strip from 3 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20. Enjoy dinner and dessert and contribute to UT's Campus Chest fundraiser. Ten percent of total sales from the event will be donated to the Campus Chest.  After dinner, head over to 3 Spoons for dessert.  From 5 to 7 p.m., 25 percent of all sales will be donated. Be sure to mention SGA in order to contribute 25% of your sale to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Campus Chest Percentage Night on the Strip is a simple and easy way to enjoy wonderful food give back to the community at the same time.
