Are you interested in a PhD degree in one of the hottest, most rapidly
advancing fields? Are you interested in interdisciplinary graduate work
in great demand? The University of Tennessee offers unique
opportunities for graduate students to work at the interface of
computational biology and biological sciences. The Scalable Computing
and Leading-Edge Innovative Technologies (SCALE-IT) Program is an
NSF-funded IGERT traineeship that funds PhD students interested in
computational biology research. Students who are accepted into PhD
programs in several departments, including Biochemistry and Cellular and
Molecular Biology, the Program in Genome Science and Technology,
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and others, are eligible to
apply for support from the SCALE-IT program. Students accepted into
the SCALE-IT program earn an Interdisciplinary Graduate Minor in
Computational Science in addition to the PhD.
There are many benefits to earning this distinguished SCALE-IT award,
which include a $30,000 salary, health insurance, and paid tuition
(also renewable for year 2 of graduate training). We are currently
accepting SCALE-IT applications (http://web.utk.edu/~scaleit ). In the
fall of 2011 semester we will offer SCALE-IT awards to up to 8
competitive and accomplished students. The deadline is February 1,
2011, but early applications are encouraged. Note that a separate
application to a PhD program in a participating department at UTK is
required.
The SCALE-IT program offers students passionate about computational
biology a chance for professional development and teamwork. Emphasis is
given to scientific ethics and communicating science effectively. If
this type of program appeals to you, take a look at our website and take
a moment to complete the SCALE-IT application. Please submit the
application package to the attention of Dr. Harry Richards, Program
Manager.
Contact the Program Manager for more information about SCALE-IT.
