Subject: Social Media Stalking
We have received a UT Police report concerning possible social media stalking
of some of our students.
The alleged stalker has approached students, identifying herself as an alumna
and asking if the students want to join an unnamed sorority. After convincing
the students to "friend" her on various social media sites, the stalker began
threatening to harm the students and others.
Please be cautious in your use of social media. Establish who you are
conversing with online, recognizing that it's easy for someone to conceal their
true identity and misrepresent their affiliations in cyberspace. Avoid "friending"
people you don't know well.
Please be especially careful when asked to communicate via Skype because a
stalker could then have an electronic record of your image.
If you are approached by a suspicious person or if someone threatens you via
a social media site message, please contact UT Police at (865) 974-3114.
