FACULTY POSITION – School of Library and Information Studies Digital
Studies Initiative

The University of Wisconsin‐Madison School of Library and
Information Studies (SLIS) seeks an exceptional candidate with
demonstrated commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and
service to join our dynamic learning community as Assistant or
Associate Professor beginning fall 2011.

SLIS faculty members are expected to conduct research, teach two
courses per semester, advise master’s students and supervise
doctoral research. As part of the course load for this position, the
faculty member will teach one undergraduate Digital Studies course
per semester with the broad goal of increasing undergraduate
students' media, visual, technology and information literacies. The
successful applicant will also contribute to the foundation of a new
interdisciplinary digital studies initiative at the university.

We seek applicants who also have teaching and research expertise in
one or more of the following areas: children’s and youth online
practices, information, or literature; digital curation,
preservation, and archives; community engagement and public
librarianship; organization of digital information; digital and print
culture; transformations in scholarly communication. Applications
from outstanding candidates in other areas will also be considered.

Required: Candidates should have a Ph.D. by August 2011, research and
publications commensurate with experience or evidence of ability to
carry out a research agenda, and potential for or demonstrated
excellence in teaching. All candidates should be committed to
diversity, prepared to seek opportunities to extend the School's
funding opportunities and thriving collaborations, and to contribute
to its service mission. Applicants should be prepared to teach in
core areas of the master’s curriculum and to contribute to the
distance master’s program.

SLIS has approximately 200 masters and 20 doctoral students in LIS,
and is a partner in the UW‐Madison Digital Studies initiative.
Please see the SLIS Vision and Mission Statement at http://
www.slis.wisc.edu/vision.html. The Digital Studies program, a cross‐
departmental initiative, prepares undergraduate students to
critically analyze and creatively compose with new media and
information technologies (see http://www.dighum.wisc.edu/).

SLIS is equipped with a newly remodeled instructional computer
laboratory, a usability lab, and its own library in addition to the
resources of the University Libraries. It cooperates actively with
the University Library System, the Cooperative Children's Book Center
and the Wisconsin Historical Society's library and archives. It is
home to a large and vital Continuing Education Service, the Center
for the History of Print Culture, and the UW Information/
Communications Technology and Policy Research Cluster. It is located
in a modern classroom building overlooking beautiful Lake Mendota in
one of the world's finest universities and in one of the United
