Newsletter for UT Knoxville Students

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special

--- This week, UT Knoxville continues to celebrate its Life of the Mind Program with a visit by Tracy Kidder, author of this year’s book, "Mountains Beyond Mountains." Also this week, the campus community is invited to vote on the top creative projects done by first-year students after reading the book.
Now in its seventh year, the Life of the Mind program encourages all first-year students to read a common book during the summer, submit a creative response and then participate in discussion groups led by faculty and staff during their first week on campus. "Mountains Beyond Mountains" is the biography of Dr. Paul Farmer, and it features themes that include Haiti, health, poverty, science and religion.
Kidder will give a lecture and sign copies of his book at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Alumni Memorial Building’s Cox Auditorium. This event is open only to university freshmen, but can be viewed via live webcast at http://utk.edu/go/l7.
Life of the Mind discussion leaders and committee members reviewed all of the creative responses submitted by first-year students and chose the Top 25. Those projects have not been posted online at http://torch.utk.edu/lifeofthemind/projects/ so the campus community can view them and vote their favorites for the next few days.
The public vote will be used by Life of the Mind program administrators to choose the Top 10 projects and select an overall winner.
The Top 10 finalists will join Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek and Kidder for a special breakfast celebration on Friday. In addition, the winner will receive an iPad, four runners-up will receive iPods and five runners-up will receive bookstore gift certificates.

--- Show your Volunteer Spirit and support the Vols on College Colors Day, Friday, Sept. 3, by wearing orange and white. Students and all other Volunteer fans are encouraged to throw on their favorite college hats, T-shirts, ties or jewelry and head to work or campus in full Tennessee spirit.
