Dear Math Honors Students,
The requirements for a Math Honors degree include taking 4 hours of 497 (2
hours per semester). If you are graduating this spring and haven't taken
it yet, you need to sign up ASAP. I'll be teaching 497 this fall, and the
first order of business is to schedule a time. My plan is to meet once per
week in a double period that includes the JC time-slot at 3:35. I believe
that the best option would be 3:35-5:15 on Thursdays. If you will be
taking 497 and have a schedule conflict with that time slot, let me know
ASAP.
The first half of the period will consist of lectures, JC, or student
talks, while the second half will consist of discussion and problem
sessions. There will be a variety of topics. For mathematics, I'd like to
introduce some of the topics worked on by students in the summer research
program. We might also learn a bit about hyperbolic geometry. Students
will present their senior theses (more on that later) and we will talk
about giving talks and writing papers. Other possible topics are graduate
school and GREs.
As soon as I have a room reserved, I'll let you know where we are meeting.
