Newsletter for UT Knoxville Students

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special

--- Spring 2010 Commencement events continue this week. For the latest schedule, visit http://www.utk.edu/commencement/spring10/ceremonies/.

Good News

--- Forty-four students have received scholarships from the Center for International Education at UT Knoxville that will help them study abroad this summer and during the 2010-11 academic year. Eight of the recipients have won W.K. McClure Scholarships for the Study of World Affairs. These students receive up to $5,000 to support their study, research and creative projects abroad aimed at enhancing and promoting education for world responsibility.

--- It takes a lot of energy to be Jackie Young, which is a good thing because energy just happens to be Young's specialty. When the nuclear engineering major at UT Knoxville wasn't in class or the library, or playing her clarinet in the Pride of the Southland Marching Band, she was planning science bowls and community service events.

--- For UT Knoxville graduate student Harrison Huaqing Pang, video production is both a science and an art. Pang, who is graduating this month with a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Art, specializes in video art installations, using the training and experience he received as a broadcasting technician and videographer for the Associated Press.

--- Many UT Vols give their time to various volunteer efforts, but few would give up a real job to be a volunteer. Deen Alam, a senior majoring in psychology with a concentration in neuroscience and biological psychology, was offered a job at Parkwest Medical Center and declined to continue volunteering. He said he values the flexibility of his time as a volunteer and wants to stick to his plans to become a successful doctor.

--- The Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies has announced the winner of the 2010-11 Jimmy and Dee Haslam Dissertation Fellowship. The $15,000 fellowship has been awarded to Miguel Gomez, a graduate student in the Department of History, to support research during the academic year 2010-2011 on his dissertation project on the decisive Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa during the Spanish 'Reconquista.' Miguel's dissertation explores the motivation and conduct of the battle's participants, and the significance of the Christian victory in the Crusades. Thanks to the generous support of Jimmy and Dee Haslam, and other donors like them, the Marco Institute is pleased to be able to support the core missions of the College of Arts and Sciences and UT Knoxville in education and research. For more info call 974-1859.

--- The Marco Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies has announced the winner of the annual Anne Marie Van Hook Memorial Summer Travel Fellowship for graduate students. The $5,000 fellowship has been awarded to Gina Cash, a graduate student in the Department of History, to support archival research in Great Britain this summer on her project on women's participation in the law courts of sixteenth-century Scotland. For more info call 974-1859.

--- The third of four finalists for the job of director of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy at UT Knoxville will participate in a public forum today. The forum featuring Deborah Taylor Tate will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in rooms 204-205 at the Baker Center.

--- A celebration and kickoff for UT Knoxville's Team Living Light's entry into the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon Competition on Washington's National Mall will be held at 4 p.m. today at the UT Zero Energy House, which has served as a prototype for the entry, on Humanities Plaza across from Circle Park. UT’s Team Living Light is one of only 20 teams chosen to design and build a marketable, functioning, solar powered house for the international contest in October 2011. Although the Solar Decathlon began in 2002, this marks the first time UT Knoxville will compete.
