Special

--- Student Survey -- Please take a survey compiled by the 2009-2010 SGA leadership to express your concerns and opinions about our student life here at UT. This will help guide SGA in making decisions that affect you and our campus. When you complete the online survey, you will be redirected to a page with an update on SGA activities over this past year. The survey is located at http://studentvoice.com/tenn/sgasurvey2010.

--- UTPD will conduct a text of the UT ALERT system after 5 p.m. today, May 3. A test will be sent via e-mail and/or text messaging to those who have signed up for the UT ALERT system. Other emergency notification systems will also be tested, including the public address speakers attached to nearly three dozen blue light phones across campus. To sign up to receive UT ALERT messages via text message and/or e-mail go to http://www.utk.edu/utalert/. You may also login and check your subscription information.

Good News

--- It's finals season: the time of the semester when many students turn to all-nighters and last-minute cramming for the big tests. The final exam or paper can be very intimidating if you are not prepared, and many students find themselves overwhelmed as they hurriedly try to cram several months' worth of material into their already exhausted brains. The Student Success Center, which provides the support students need to be successful at UT, recommends a few ways to stay focused and prepare for finals. Read more by visiting http://www.utk.edu/tntoday/2010/04/30/healthy-tips-for-happy-finals/.

--- Two UT Knoxville students have received Fulbright grants for the 2010-2011 academic year. Jordan Kuck, a doctoral student in history, will be conducting research in Latvia, while Alex Tullock, a graduating senior in Russian, will go to the country for an English teaching assistantship.

--- The Office of Graduate Training and Mentorship has been created to help departments campuswide recruit and retain graduate students, as well as provide them with the very best academic experience and professional development possible. Part of the Graduate School, the office opened in February 2010.

--- The Office of Information Technology (OIT) launched a customer satisfaction survey on February 9, 2010, with the purpose of gathering input on your satisfaction with the IT services OIT provides and your ideas for improvement.

A total of 3,287 surveys were completed (students, 1,859; faculty, 491 and staff, 937). A summary of the survey results and all comments is available at http://oit.utk.edu/2010survey.

Three areas that received the lowest overall satisfaction ratings were electronic mail (Tmail, Exchange), UT Web search engine, and online class registration (Circle Park Online). OIT is diligently working to improve all three of these areas.

Student e-mail will be outsourced to both Microsoft and Google. Beginning June 7, you will be able to request migration to Live@edu (Microsoft). With this move, you will receive a 10 GB e-mail mailbox, compared to the current Tmail 100 MB mailbox for undergraduates and the 250 MB mailbox for graduate students. You also will receive a 25 GB "skydrive," which is a file storage area. Students who move to Microsoft will still retain their utk.edu domain. Plans to implement Google Mail are still being finalized.

--- Daniel Berry, WUOT 91.9 FM program director and host of the station's popular "Morning Concert," will perform with pianist and WUOT weekend announcer Melony Maness at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church in Oak Ridge. Admission is free. The concert is part of WUOT's 60th anniversary celebration. It will feature a variety of music composed by J.S. Bach, Richard Strauss, Ludwig van Beethoven and Ralph Vaughan Williams, as well as traditional Irish songs.

Important Deadlines

--- The university's anti-virus contract with McAfee will expire this summer. All students that are using UT's version of McAfee VirusScan Enterprise for Windows and Virex 8.6 for Mac should remove the software as soon as possible and install a new anti-virus application. The deadline for removing these applications is June 1. OIT is recommending Microsoft Security Essentials for student computers running Windows and ClamXav for Macintosh computers. Both of these applications are free for personal use. Information about both of these products and how to obtain them is available on the UT anti-virus Web site, http://antivirus.utk.edu. If you have any questions or would like assistance with this transition, please contact the OIT HelpDesk at 974-9900 or visit the OIT Service Center located at the Commons at Hodges Library.

Ready for the World Events

--- It's time to begin submitting your events, activities, speakers and programs to be included in the Ready for the World Passport for the fall semester of the 2010-2011 academic year.

Students are urged to use the electronic form to quickly and easily provide information about events related to the international and intercultural initiative. The form is found at http://www.utk.edu/readyfortheworld/passport/.

For several years, Ready for the World "Passports" have helped promote campus activities and initiatives. The Passport is a great personal planner that is distributed free to students, faculty and staff. It is often used as a recruitment tool and serves as a valuable record of the extensive programming that supports Ready for the World goals.

In order to produce the Passport in time for spring semester distribution, information about your group's spring programs is needed by Friday, July 2. These events might include, but are not limited to, films, lectures, exhibits, campus-wide activities, etc.

Any questions about the Passport, should be addressed to Amy Blakely at [log in to unmask] or (865) 974-5034.
