Dear Friends of Marco,
As summer begins and campus gets quiet, at least for a short time, I want to
take this opportunity to update you on some of the highlights from this year
at the Marco Institute.

***Heather Hirschfeld to assume Marco directorship in January***
As I think most everyone knows already, Heather Hirschfeld (English) will take
over as the next Riggsby Director on January 1, 2011. She was recommended
for the position by a vote of the Advisory Board, and Dean Bursten appointed
her soon afterward. Heather will share administrative tasks with me over the
summer, and she will join me at meetings during the fall term.

***Marco on the move***
Next year at this time, Marco will move across the street to the 6th floor of
Greve Hall (next to Dunford). This is to make way for the new University
Center building and the demolition of Temple Court. In Greve, Marco will have
more office space, including a larger library, a larger lounge, and a dedicated
graduate student study room.

***Marco library***
In preparation for this move to larger quarters, we have rewritten the funding
proposal for a Marco research library, and we are actively seeking funds so
that we can increase our holdings from the current 200 volumes to about 1000
volumes by the fall of 2011. To do this, we will also need to have a state-of-
the-art security system in place, which is included in the proposal.

***Summer Latin Program***
Thanks to a generous donation from Stuart and Kate Riggsby, and
contributions from four Marco-affiliated departments, Marco will again offer
three levels of Latin instruction this summer, to be taught by Niki Hamonic and
Stefan Hodges-Kluck .

***Josh Westgard will return to Marco for a second year***
The Post-doctoral award committee invited Josh to apply for a second year of
postdoctoral support, which he did, and they granted him a second year as
our first Haslam Postdoctoral Fellow. Josh will be working at the Folger Library
this summer, but we are pleased that he will return to Knoxville in the fall.

***Nicole Hamonic will return for another year as Medieval Studies lecturer***
We are also very pleased that Niki will serve another year as our full-time
lecturer in Medieval Studies.

***Graduate student kudos***
Congratulations to Gina Cash and to Miguel Gomez for winning the Anne Marie
Van Hook Travel Fellowship (Gina) and the Haslam Dissertation Fellowship
(Miguel); and congratulations to Geoff Martin, who will serve as next year’s
GTA in Medieval Studies.

***Special thanks***
Finally, I wish to thank everyone for support during this transitional phase.
The manuscript workshop, the spring symposium, the medieval studies
workshop, the seminar in late antiquity, and many other events add up to a
thriving program of which we can all be proud.

A special thanks goes to Michael Kulikowski who left Marco in incredibly fine
shape; to the Marco Steering Committee, most of whom served on various
subcommittees as well; and, of course, to Erin Read, whose able head and
hands make an Interim Directorship possible.

I am thrilled that Erin will continue with Marco into next year. Her institutional
memory has been invaluable, and I am glad that Heather, too, will benefit from
her prodigious organizational talents and basic good sense.

All the best to you and yours for a good summer,

--Laura
