Dear Math Honors Students,
I'm happy to announce that the NSF has approved a 1-year extension of our
grant. This means that all math honors students in good standing will
receive $5000 scholarships next year. Note that paperwork for these
scholarships will not be done until later in the summer. If your
scholarship is not posted by mid-July then let me know. If you were
awarded a regular math departmental scholarship then as I stated
previously you may not receive both; I will assume that you would prefer
the bigger one (which is always the math honors scholarship). As usual,
the math honors scholarship may be added to any scholarships not from the
math department, up to the university maximum (it is pretty rare for that
maximum to be reached even with a Chancellor's scholarship).
On another note, we have a lot of remaining funds available for travel. If
you have done research (or will be doing so this summer), I strongly
encourage you to look for a conference at which to present your work. The
grant will provide airfare, hotel, and other transportation provided you
give a talk at least 15 minutes long. The one exception is for students
who are invited to give a poster session at the joint MAA-AMS meetings
next January in New Orleans.
