The Miami University Libraries seeks an enthusiastic librarian for the
Walter Havighurst Special Collections. Reporting to the Head of Special
Collections, this position has primary responsibility for processing
manuscript collections, and also assists the Head, provides research
assistance, and participates in other departmental activities, including
instruction, collection development, the creation of exhibits and exhibit
catalogs, the development of digital collections, donor relations, and other
duties as assigned.

In addition, this position has secondary responsibility for supervising
cataloging activities in the department, including ensuring access to rare
book and other print materials, manuscript and archival collections, and
digital collections. The incumbent assists with the training and supervision
of cataloging assistants and works in close collaboration with the
department head, the Technical Services Department, and the Digital
Initiatives Department.

Qualifications - Required:

• A graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution.
• Training and/or experience working with current cataloging rules and
descriptive standards including AACR2rev, FRBR, LCSH, and the Library of
Congress Classification System.
• Training and/or experience providing reference or research assistance in
an academic library.
• Training and/or experience using OCLC and an integrated library system
such as III.
• Aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail,
demonstrated problem-solving skills, and flexibility.
• Ability to work independently and prioritize work to ensure that
departmental and library goals are realized.
• Demonstrated strength in written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team and service oriented environment.
• Ability to meet the Miami University criteria for advancement and
promotion of librarians as outlined in the Libraries Appointment, Rank and
Promotion System (LARPS) .

Qualifications - Preferred:

• Formal coursework or training in rare books, analytical bibliography,
special collections librarianship, and/or archival/manuscript processing.
• Reading knowledge of Latin and French, German, Spanish, Russian.
• Training and/or experience with archival processing and standards such as
DACS, and EAD.
• Training and/or experience with the bibliographic control of digital
collections, including one or more metadata standards.
• Training and/or experience cataloging rare books and/or other special
collections materials using Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Books and
relevant specialized thesauri.
• Experience in supervision, library instruction, and/or website design and
management.
• Experience in a service oriented special collections and/or archives.

The Walter Havighurst Special Collections includes rare books, notable
subject collections, and manuscript collections. The collections (over
65,000 volumes and over 2,000 linear feet of archival collections) broadly
support study and research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
Several collections are accessible online through the Miami University
Digital Archive.

This is a full-time, permanent, 12-month appointment at the rank of
Assistant or Associate Librarian, depending on qualifications. Appointment
as Associate Librarian requires documented record based upon very strong
performance in primary professional responsibilities, very strong
performance in either service or scholarship/creative activity, and strong
performance in either service or scholarship/creative activity. Salary
starting at $41,000 and dependent on qualifications.
