Newsletter for UT Knoxville Students

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special

--- Enhanced Security for Hodges Library: The UT Libraries are in the process of implementing a card swipe entry system for Hodges Library between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. The second-floor door across from Melrose will serve as the sole entry point for UT students, faculty, and staff during these hours, and a swipe of the VolCard will be required to enter. Individuals may still exit at the ground floor doors, but entry will be closed between midnight and 7 a.m. at the Volunteer Boulevard entrance. Please look for additional publicity regarding the start date for the card swipe activation and be prepared to carry your VolCard with you. Announcement of a start date will be made well in advance of activation.

--- Changes to Tmail/Outlook Web Access: When using Tmail from your browser, have you ever been writing an e-mail and your session timed out? Based on user feedback, OIT will be expanding the default timeout for the Public/Shared Computer option from 15 minutes to 1 hour. The timeout settings for the Private Computer option will remain 24 hours.

OIT will implement this change at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, March 18. Once the change has been made, you will have up to 1 hour when composing an e-mail message before the system times out. If you need more time, you can choose the Private Computer option when logging into Tmail.

This change will only affect you when you are accessing Tmail from a web browser. It does not affect the Microsoft Outlook Client access.

If you have any questions about this change, please contact the OIT HelpDesk at (865) 974-9900 or online at http://help.utk.edu.

--- Undergraduate researchers, scholars, artists and performers will be in the spotlight for UT Knoxville's first-ever Research Week.

The week of March 21-26 will see a concert, an honors symposium, a student paper competition and an art competition. The Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement (EURēCA), in its 14th year, will cap the week of celebration.

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, former state governor and president of UT, will open the week with a keynote address. Richard Rodriguez, a writer known for his book Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez, will keynote the honors symposium Monday evening.

Good News

--- The UT Libraries have installed new walk-up document scanning stations in the Hodges Library Commons, the Music Library, and the Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine Library. Save an electronic copy to your flash drive or e-mail it to yourself. Scanning is free and kinder to the environment as it uses no paper or toner.

--- One hundred seventy-one UT Knoxville students have received $500 study-abroad scholarships funded by a study-abroad fee collected from undergraduates.

The $10-per-year fee, proposed by the Student Government Association and approved by the Board of Trustees, went into effect in fall of 2008. The scholarships are based on a combination of financial need and academic merit.

Some of the students used the scholarships for study-abroad experiences during spring break; others will use them for study abroad during mini-term and during the summer.
