Many of you may recall Dean Ed Holley of UNC. Here's what his daughter,
Beth, and UNC's former dean, Barbara Moran, had to say regarding his recent
death.

February 19, 2010

It is with great sadness that I tell you my father, Edward G. Holley, died
Thursday night around 11:30pm. He had been in good health and had a sudden
turn for the worse and within two days he was gone. He lived on his own
terms and died on his own terms. For this we are grateful. The care he
received while at Croasdaile Retirement Village was more than anyone could
wish for when facing these trials of life. He was loved by friends, family,
and the staff who worked with him. They were all very fond of him, and
cared for him dearly. We appreciate all the kind thoughts, wishes and
memories each of you have shared with us and we realize what a major impact
he had on this world. I shall collect all these items, words of wisdom, and
memories, so we can create his legacy from the eyes of others for his
children and grandchildren to read, keep and cherish. We are humbled by his
example.

Due to many scheduling conflicts and winter weather making travel
prohibitive for some, we will be having a graveside service at the Chapel
Hill Cemetery off of on 15-501 in Chapel Hill, NC. We are tentatively
hoping it will be sometime Monday morning around 10:30am, but we have not
confirmed this with the funeral home yet. I will let you know when we have
something more permanent scheduled. We will also be planning a larger more
comprehensive memorial service at a later time so that those who wish to
attend may have the time to make travel arrangements. You are more than
welcome to attend the graveside service and/or to come to the later memorial
service. We will notify you of the future date of the memorial service once
we have that organized.

We are requesting donations be made to the Edward G. Holley scholarship
fund. Send them to

Thank you for sharing in our grief and sorrow, but mostly we thank you
for being a part of our father's life. His friends, contemporaries,
family, church members, and the other millions he has come across allowed
him to create bonds that have bridged the ages. He was so honored to have
you be a part of his life and he cherished his relationships above all.
As his children we were able to watch the way he carried himself and how
he reacted in any situation and we make feeble attempts at achieving the
greatness he encompassed.

Dad was a gifted, kind and intelligent Leader, and he found it was easy
for him to integrate, associate, initiate, assimilate, delegate,
compromise, and lead beyond what most people could attain. He rarely
accepted "No" as an answer, but would pursue something with a gentle
persuasion that would not only get him what was needed, but also gave him
the respect of those in his company. We admired his ability to keep his
faith and determination in alignment, while pursuing goals that lead him
repeatedly to worthy causes he enjoyed developing and helping. Few are
able to master Ed Holley's gift of communicating willfully with purpose,
to promote understanding and intelligence in the world, and to share that
knowledge with others. That instilled the admiration we had for his
ability to live by his faith, be committed to his family, and achieve and
conquer whatever he set out to do. We are blessed to have so many friends
as caring and devoted as you.

Dear SILS Alums,

I am sorry to have to tell you that Dr. Edward Holley, Dean of SILS from
1972 until 1985 and Kenan Professor until he retired in 1995, died last
night in his sleep. Although I realize that some of you did not have the
opportunity to know Ed, he was a remarkable man and certainly one of the
most distinguished LIS educators of the 20th century. He came to SILS from
the University of Houston where he had been Director of the University
Library. Upon his arrival, he made many changes in the school and its
programs. He began the doctoral program, instituted the "Block" curriculum
and the 2 year master's degree, and hired a number of distinguished faculty
members such as Lester Asheim, Bud Gambee, Bob Broadus, Marilyn Miller and
Haynes McMullen. He served as president of the American Library Association
from 1974-75 and won numerous awards including the Melvil Dewey Award, the
Lippincott Award, the ACRL Academic Librarian of the year Award, and the
Beta Phi Mu Award. He was an eminent library historian who published widely
and who won many prizes for his scholarship. His passing is a real loss to
both SILS and LIS education.

Ed was not only a distinguished professional but also a caring and
compassionate individual. He was one of the most unselfish people I ever met
and was always concerned with the good of others. He was a wonderful mentor
and someone who cared deeply about the students, the faculty and the
School. Using his own term, he always put the "good of the order" before
his individual needs. He was truly a remarkable person and one who will be
missed deeply by those who had the opportunity to know him. He hired me as a
new assistant professor at SILS and almost everything I know about "deaning"
I learned from Ed. He was a real advocate of students and new professionals
and I know that he was an influence in the life of many of you also.

I don't know the details about the funeral arrangements but we will post
them on the webpage when we do.

Barbara
