Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 695: Gender and Education
(Summer Session 1, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:45 to 8:50 pm)
Gender is not simply a matter of biology, the "natural," or the
functional. Rather, gender is socially constructed, and its
organization and meanings vary enormously across cultures, over
historical periods, and from one institution to another in contemporary
U.S. society. Furthermore, gender is deeply shaped by (and in turn
helps shape) cross-cutting lines of difference and inequality--of social
class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, age, and national origin. This
course will focus on gender in educational contexts. We will begin by
deconstructing the question of gender. We will then focus on gender
across educational contexts-in schools, among university students, and
within the professoriate. Adopting a critical lens will allow us to
deconstruct the ways in which gender pervades educational institutions,
shaping the lives and opportunities of all who participate in them.
