Dear Math Honors Students,
As I have mentioned previously, we are seeking 5-year renewal of the NSF
grant that pays for your scholarships, among other things. It could be
April or May before we get word about the grant. I am optimistic, but it
is always possible that the grant will not be renewed. If the grant is not
renewed for next year, math honors students will still receive
scholarships through an agreement with the university, but they will
likely be smaller than $4000. With this in mind, I encourage you to apply
for the Cooley, Schmidt and Maples (C-S-M) math department scholarships
that will be announced shortly. If our grant is not funded, C-S-M
scholarships may be added to math honors scholarships, up to a total of
$4000 (C-S-M scholarships are much less than $4000). This cap concerns
*only* the total of C-S-M and math honors scholarships, not, for example,
HOPE, university-wide scholarships, or those from other departments. If
our grant *is* renewed, then the total of C-S-M and math honors
scholarships may not exceed the math honors scholarships for next
year--anticipated at $5000.
