College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences graduate students
please be aware of the following additions to the course list for Summer
and Fall 2010.

Please forward to graduate students who may be interested. Please excuse
cross-postings.

The following two new graduate courses will be offered in summer and
fall, plus two additional courses which counts toward the graduate
certificate in qualitative research methods:

***
Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 695: Gender and Education
(Summer Session 1, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:45 to 8:50 pm)

Gender is not simply a matter of biology, the "natural," or the
functional. Rather, gender is socially constructed, and its
organization and meanings vary enormously across cultures, over
historical periods, and from one institution to another in contemporary
U.S. society. Furthermore, gender is deeply shaped by (and in turn
helps shape) cross-cutting lines of difference and inequality--of social
class, race, ethnicity, sexuality, age, and national origin. This
course will focus on gender in educational contexts. We will begin by
deconstructing the question of gender. We will then focus on gender
across educational contexts-in schools, among university students, and
within the professoriate. Adopting a critical lens will allow us to
deconstruct the ways in which gender pervades educational institutions,
shaping the lives and opportunities of all who participate in them.

Instructional Technology 532 (formerly EP532): Introduction to
Computer-Mediated Communication (Fall 2010 Tuesdays, 5:05-7:45 pm)

Includes an overview of the field of computer-mediated communication
(CMC) and investigates how CMC tools can most effectively be integrated
into teaching and learning, including distance and blended environments.

The following summer session courses count toward the graduate
certificate in qualitative research methods:

***

Cultural Studies in Education 526: Philosophy of Education (Summer 2010,
Mondays, 1:30-4:45 pm.)

This philosophy of education course is designed to expose
the student to important classical articles in philosophy of education
as well as current contemporary articles in philosophy of education.
Students will learn how to explicate, interpret, and critique
philosophical arguments. The course is designed to be an interactive
discussion of educational issues and ideas, with the hope that the
student will further develop her/his own philosophy of education through
the process.

Educational Administration 618: Advanced Qualitative Research in
Educational Leadership (Summer Session 1 2010, M & @, 4:40-8:50)

This qualitative methods seminar explores critical issues in qualitative

research at an advanced level. Students explore more fully the areas of
interviewing, thematic analysis, the use of theory and theoretical
frameworks in qualitative research, and issues of methodological
defensibility and analytical rigor (validity and reliability) in
qualitative research. Prerequisite(s): Cultural Studies in Education 560

or Educational Administration 615.
