Hi Sue,

I can certainly testify that alternative career paths for PhDs is a  
concern of mine. I've actually included in my syllabus a number of  
readings that touch on the reality of the academic labor market and on  
the salience of these difficulties when one attemps to combine  
motherhood with an academic career.

One must however consider that all parties have a stake in the denial  
of these potential outcomes, not least of all the students. I believe  
this article has been one of the most viewed on the Chronicle site for  
several weeks now:
