POSITION: Systems/Distance Learning Librarian; Assistant/Associate
Professor of Library and Library Services
TYPE OF APPOINTMENT: Probationary tenure-track faculty position,
academic year and summer duty. Assignment to academic rank will be
commensurate with experience and education.
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications according to an equity scale.
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 31, 2009 or when filled.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Systems/Distance Learning Librarian will be
responsible for the effective operation, use, and continued development
of the library’s various computer services, applications, and systems in
a consortium environment (MnPALS). He or she will coordinate,
administer, and evaluate the library’s IT needs, both as relates to the
consortium and to the University. Additionally, this librarian will
serve as the library’s operational liaison to Bemidji State University’s
distance learning and information technology services. The
Systems/Distance Learning Librarian will participate in library
collection development, instruction, and departmental governance,
working with faculty, staff, and student assistants. Scheduled library
reference hours will be required, including possible evening and weekend
shifts. University-wide collegial involvement and professional
activities, as identified in the IFO/MnSCU Master Agreement, will also
be expected of the successful candidate. The faculty member should also
anticipate involvement in activities which support Bemidji State
University’s themes of environmental stewardship, civic engagement, and
global/multicultural understanding. The applicant should demonstrate a
knowledge of and interest in diverse cultures and populations.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Master’s degree in Library Science from an
ALA-accredited institution, completed by the date of hire, is required.
A second (subject) master’s or doctoral degree will be required for
tenure. Candidates who have completed or are in the process of
completing the additional advanced degree will be considered. Excellent
analytical and problem-solving skills in a technological environment, a
strong public-service commitment to library users and librarianship, the
ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of library and
university staff, and a basic knowledge of computing, beyond the running
of applications and elementary programming, are required. The
development of more specific skills to deal with technical services
modules, electronic resources management systems, integrated library
systems, and other library-related information technologies will be
anticipated of the person hired. Experience with a broad range of
commercial software products, the internet, and web development and
authoring tools would be highly preferred skills, as would specific
knowledge of the Ex Libris Aleph 500 system.
