“Writing as a Business” is the theme for a two-week series of community
workshops sponsored by the Knoxville Writers’ Guild in July. In
modestly-priced classes, presenters will coach participants on how to be
better writers and make writing work as a business.
The sessions will be July 6th - 9th and July 13th -16th on the main campus
of Pellissippi State Community College. Published authors will share
expertise in areas such as writing about crime scenes, travel, and medical
drama, writing poetry and starting your own publishing business. Classes
are open to anyone.
All 3 hour classes are $30 for KWG members and $42 for non-members. Two
hour classes are $20 for KWG members and $28 for non-members. Discount for

“Our committee made the decision to be sensitive to the economic times,”
said Martha Rose Woodward, Education Committee Chairman, on the theme of
the annual series.
Presenters and their sessions include:
Dr. Bryce Anderson, engineering consultant and car crash analyst, will
teach two classes, CSI for Fiction Writers 1 and 2. Anderson keeps his
students spellbound as he provides expert details on crime scenes, car
crashes, and ballistics.
KB Ballentine, author of the poetry collection, Gathering Stones, and a
teacher to both high school and college students, will teach “Writing
Precisely” and “A Return to Celtic Forms”
Katie Chambers, creator of the ”Jottings” series, will offer workshops for
people interested in taking personal stories as well as childhood stories
from page to print.
Joanna Francis will offer two sessions entitled “Starting Your Own
Publishing Business.” Francis will give students all the information they
need in order to take their work from the page to press while earning
money.
Alex Gabbard, acclaimed author of 16 books, magazine and newspaper
features, and thousands of published photos will teach, “Travel Writing
and Travel Photography”.
Linda Parsons Marion, poet, author of the poetry collection Mother Land
and poetry editor of Now & Then magazine, will teach “The Dark Well of
Family Experience: Writing Your Way Back to Light .”
Cyn Mobley, USA Today best selling author, will offer her popular series
of classes on The Realities of Writing, covering outlines, fiction
writing, agents and New York publishers.
Dr. Scott Savage, an emergency room specialist, has created two new
classes, including “Medical Drama for Writers” and “How to Use Sounds to
Improve Expression in Writing.”
Don Williams, journalist, publisher, and teacher, will teach “Break These
Rules...” and “Drawing on the Subconscious” as he provides basic skills
for writers of all levels.
The Knoxville Writers’ Guild offers monthly meetings, writers’ groups and
