Job Description:
The New Orleans Public Library is seeking a Library Director who can provide leadership in the rebuilding of the New Orleans Public Library system post Hurricane Katrina. This recovering library system, with a budget of $7.5 million, has launched an ambitious $30 million capital campaign to rebuild and renovate multiple branches affected by the hurricane. The Director will work with a highly motivated administrative team, a staff of over 120, and report to the Library Board of Directors in the historical urban setting of New Orleans. 

Responsibilities and oversight will include overall library supervision, strategic planning, budget preparation, building programs, fundraising and grant writing, quality of library services, and working with library staff and volunteers. 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
* Progressive management style with a vision for the future.
* Proven library management and strategic planning skills.
* Experience in fundraising and programming.
* Familiarity with library technology and structure.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to interact professionally with staff, the public and local government officials.
* Ability to lead and develop the talent of professional and support staff.
* Experience with a wide range of information technology.
* Demonstrated success in managing projects.
* Ability to track information and technology trends and envision benefits for information access, instructional technology and management systems.
* Demonstrated effectiveness as an advocate and public speaker.
* Demonstrated organizational and planning skills. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:
Master's degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program and 5+ years of professional librarian experience in an administrative capacity, preferably in a multi-unit urban system. 

Salary: $105,000.

INTRODUCTION:  Position is located in the Media and Resource Branch (N922), Navy General Library Program (NGLP).  Incumbent will provide assistance to the NGLP program manager in the areas of technical guidance, training and direction for the library program.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Assists in the development of policies, procedures, technical guidance, benchmarks, strategic plans
 and standards in concert with NGLP, HQ CNIC and DoD policies, instructions and standards. Assists in coordinating and developing library functions within the Navy to include reference/research, collection development, acquisitions, property
accountability, metadata, taxonomies, reports procedures, marketing and public relations, budgeting/accounting, and library automation and information technology. Assists in the assessment of general libraries for program effectiveness and compliance with Navy and DoD program standards. Assists in the outfitting of new ship libraries, including collection development and budget execution.  Prepares a variety of correspondence/reports/briefs. Assists in the planning for functional facilities.  Attends professional meetings, conferences, workshops, and seminars as required.  Assists in the program development and preparation of workshops and other training events.  Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION
 REQUIREMENTS: Masters Degree in Library Science, Information Services or Information Management from an American Library Association Accredited Degree Program*.   Knowledge of standard methods, techniques, concepts and principles of library science, including a wide range of duties in functional areas such as collection development, cataloging, and automation.  Ability to monitor new developments in information management. 
Specific knowledge of library rules, policies, and procedures for circulation and technical service. Must be able to read, write, and speak English.  Must have computer experience or training in computer applications such as Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and the Internet. Strong typing skills are required; must be able to type 40 words per minute. Work requires some
physical exertion such as long periods of standing; recurring activities such as bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, and reaching, lifting of moderately heavy
 items.  Skill in working with peers and with the public.
