Sandy Ballard, editor of the Appalachian Journal, will speak at the Nov. 6
meeting of the Knoxville Writers’ Guild about the editing process and
finding markets for what you write.
The meeting, which is open to the public, is at the Laurel Theatre at the
corner of Laurel Avenue and 16th Streets in Forth Sanders. Refreshments
are served, and a $1 donation is requested at the door. The building is
handicapped accessible.
Ballard has been editor of the Appalachian Journal since 2000. Founded in
1972, the multi-disciplinary, peer-reviewed quarterly based in Boone,
N.C., features field research, interviews, and other scholarly studies of
history, politics, economics, culture, folklore, literature, music, and
ecology. Its content includes a variety of other topics, as well as poetry
and reviews of books, films, and recordings dealing with the region of the
Appalachian Mountains.
Ballard is co-editor with Patricia Hudson of the anthology, "Listen Here:
Women Writing in Appalachia" (2003). She is a biographer with a particular
interest in the life and work of novelist Harriette Simpson Arnow.
Ballard’s other publications include "Neighbor to Neighbor: A Memoir of
Family, Community, and Civil War in Appalachian North Carolina" (2007) and
"The Collected Short Stories of Harriette Simpson Arnow" (2005).
Active in the Appalachian Studies Association, she received the
Outstanding Contribution to Appalachian Literature Award from the
